Based on my own experience, on 24MP sensor, the performance of the 16-35 SL and the WATE are pretty close in the 16mm to 21mm focal range. But the SL zoom has better resolving power on 47MP sensor body. The SL zoom is also a bit wider than the 16mm when you disable the lens profile correction. It is interesting to note that from Leica's MTFs, both lenses are optimized for better performance toward large/open f stops, a Leica lens design philosophy. Advertisement Posted December 25, 2019 Posted December 25, 2019 Hi ocean2059, Take a look here The 16-35mm zoom is amazing. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!

Specifying which one is exactly meant shouldn’t be subject to debate, obviously. But you didn’t ask which one; you specifically asked IF he meant the L mount zoom. Obviously, yes, hence my comments, including MY post that there were two. Jeff Edited December 25, 2019 by Jeff S

SrMi Posted December 25, 2019 Share #25 Posted December 25, 2019 There is only one L-mount 16-35 currently available. Lumix 16-35 is scheduled for a January 2020 release.
Jeff S Posted December 25, 2019 Share #26 Posted December 25, 2019 Exactly. And this is the SL forum. And the OP never used the name Lumix or Panasonic. And he compared the lens to the WATE. Other than that... Jeff

setuporg Posted December 25, 2019 Author Share #32 Posted December 25, 2019 Just to make sure, of course I meant that the Leica Super-Vario Elmarit SL 16-35mm is amazing. But while at it, let me just say that the Pentax D FA 15-30mm f/2.8 zoom is also amazing.:)
FlashGordonPhotography Posted December 25, 2019 Share #33 Posted December 25, 2019 It's a great lens. I especially like that it doesn't extend and that it is weather sealed, in addition to it's stellar optical performance. The 14-24 Sigma is also fabulous. I would assume the new Panasonic will be as well (I own a bunch of Panasonic lenses and they make very very good glass.) So, in the space of 6 months we have gone from 1 camera and a few lenses to 5 bodies and a choice between three excellent wide angle zooms. It's a good time to be using L mount. bags27 Posted December 25, 2019 Share #34 Posted December 25, 2019 I fully appreciate that this is neither weather resistant nor a full sensor lens, but wondering where the TL 11-23 stacks up IQ wise. It is about a pound lighter than the Sigma. More importantly, I have one. 😀

Gordon There are now 6 cameras. The SL 16-35 is also my preferred wide angle zoom. But for astrophotography the Sigma f2 24-35 Art is even better. caissa Posted December 26, 2019 Share #38 Posted December 26, 2019 Yes, that's the definition of alliance. (Only a small problem with the way Leica activates BBF on SL and SL2).

The Panasonic clutch mechanism that switches between AF and MF on certain lenses (including the S 70-200 Pro) presents issues on the Leica bodies. I considered the long zoom, but found a mint used SL 90-280 at a great price instead. Jeff Edited December 26, 2019 by Jeff S
