Good point, Agent M10.  There’s still some time left until September 24, the rumored date for the SL2 announcement.  But because of the competitive dynamics in FF, the “jus primae noctis” may not apply this time for the S line.

My first question was to know if any of you got similar information from your reseller. Because the 36MP info was unique, never heard of before. I just want some confirmation from you

This french reseller is kind of a legend in France. And be quite sure. But it is not my regular store.

Let’s see the 24th of September

Legends in the camera business are rarely wrong but we better not get our hopes up too much and wait patiently for September 24.

I also used to think that it would be surprising to see an SL2 before the S3 in any event, but that was assuming the SL2 will have 47MP or similar.  But the S line delays seem to indicate either unforeseen issues (since announced long ago), or that it just isn’t considered the system ‘flagship’ it once was, at least not as currently configured.

Don’t hold your breath. Leica will probably never made folding screen for their real Leica made in Germany.

Of course fake Leica / real Lumix  such as V-Lux will provide such screen

Since I found it hard to choose between S1 and S1r (and the same would be true when I had to choose between Z6 and Z7) for my purpose 36MP would be totally fine compromise between resolution and noise. So I hope the rumor is true.

I found it a bit tough to decide on S1R or S1.

Ultimately went with S1R... why?? 47mp :) Combine that with IBIS... huge winner.

I know with such a small company this is too much to ask for, but in the spirit of the Panny S1r/S1 and Nikon Z 7/6, I'd like to have a choice of:

SL2: 36mp

SL2-BM [ = Big Mother; or GM if it needs to be in German]: 47mp

in a slightly smaller body.

Otherwise, I wonder if Leica has a lot of unused SL parts that they could drop a 36 mps sensor into for a limited run....

What I find much worse than a 36MP sensor is that SL2 will most likely not have a folding display again.
That's the main reason for me not to buy the SL2 and buy Panasonic or Fuji..

In a community that embraces cameras without LCD you’ll be unlikely to find much resonance.

Should of filed that request a few years ago....

If the SL2 really has a 36 MPx sensor, from Sony or otherwise, Thorsten Obergaard will have to redo the review of the S1R. He used the camera to see how well the SL lenses perform with the upcoming SL2 sensors. His conclusion was “right camera, wrong guy.” Well, now it turns out it’s more like “wrong camera, wrong guy.” 😂

I also decided for the S1r and do like the camera. However sometimes I find a little less noise when bringing shadows up. I have 36MP with the Leica S body I use and so far never felt the need for MP. But needs are different. If it is "only" 36 MP I would however expect that the sensor (or camera) has other advantages over a 47 MP sensor (faster?, better noise behaviour? better DR?) I am looking forward to the announcement and the specs.

47 MP from the Q2 is not state of the art. After using the Q2 after two months. I am not impressed at all. This sensor does not worth the trouble upgrading from Q.

High ISO is worst that original Q.

ISO 50 is buggy with blown out highlights caused by unreliable live histogram. Drives me crazy.

Q2 is noticeably slower than Q. With a broken face detect AF.

Q2 processor is too slow to handle 47MP.

SL2 should have way faster CPU.

Sounds like the experience I had moving from the RX1 to the RX1 version II

These small integrated cameras are great for compactness and IQ but you can always forget about functionality

Ok, I can confirm. The SL2 definitely doesn’t have the Q2 sensor. That legend French reseller is one son of a gun.

I put my money on Sony’s new 36 MPx sensor now, even though I can’t confirm this speculation.

Nice if you also have some echo about it.

I think that a 47MP SL2 with IBIS would have been a huge threat against the very late 65MP S3.

47MP sensor would have slowed down the SL2, making it a different beast than the fast SL. Maybe 36MP is the best of both world.

Another bonus, SL2 will not be in direct competition with S1-S1R duo.

It could also explained why Jono slack reviewed the 24MP S1 and not the 47MP S1R

A 36MP sensor can be shared easily with future M11
