When I bought M10, M6 and M7 they were all in black chrome and used. Recently, I have bought a new M10p thinking that I will keep it forever.

I did not care about wear on black chrome M bodies as I bought them second hand. I have been using M10p for about two weeks now and some wear around the area where neck strap is attached started to appear. I am using brown leather Leica strap (One that is about £55). Does not disappear when rubbed with a rubber.

I know that Leica is all about how they function and I do not really care about the wear. Just wondering black chrome M10 and M10Ps wear this easily even with a leather guard that prevents metal strap ring from direct contact with the body.

Many previous M models, including the M6, M7, M8, M9 and M240, have plastic tabs above the strap lugs preventing the strap from touching the body. The M10 models don't have these. As mentioned in some previous thread, it's easy to use transparent tape instead. I use Scotch Magic and it's almost invisible on black chrome.

I liked the M10 as it didn't have the plastic protective sides. I prefer the camera aging. I also picked up a Weztlar M6 as it was sans plastic edges too.

I use the black digital CL strap on my M10D with a protective leather ring but it's already wearing on the lugs after a month or so!

a little bit out of topics...

The plastic tabs is preventing the straps metal ring to scratch the camera, but i change my neck straps' o-ring to a smaller victorinox stainless ring. and it works nicely on my M10.

Can the Leica plastic tabs be purchased and added to an M10-P or M-A by a user or technician? It looks like the strap protectors are just glued onto the black chrome coating of my M6.

No, the protectors aren't just glued on the M's body.

A hole in the body is necessary to fix them so they don't budge.

Thanks, you are right. From a quick online image search I see that there are two holes on each side of the top plate to hold the strap protectors on an M6.

Useful to know, but nothing to prevent black plastic buffers being applied to the surface.   Personally, I have reverted to the standard Leica fabric web strap for all my bodies.  It has a plastic cover over the metal clip and have no signs of wear on my chrome M10.   Easy to change if absolutely necessary.

Hello Stefan,

Welcome to the Forum.

Stainless steel split rings in a variety of sizes should be available in local hardware stores for very little money.

Best Regards,

Michael

The tape solution after about 4 months. I put it there when changing to a safety strap for a trip and then left it there when changing back to the Leica strap.

Hi Michael, thank you. I happen to have a few victorinox pocket knifes and just take the ring for my M10.

Fishing shops are good to buy quality ss split rings.

If you are feeling flush...the Nikon split rings on ebay are good as they come with plastic inserts, which act as bumpers, and are triangular...look good. Nice, work well, look right ...act the part.

It doesn't bother me (I like "industrial chic"),  but I'd guess the digital M black chrome is just not engineered for as long a life as on the M4-2/P/M6 cameras.

What is "worthwhile" for a camera with an expected life of 40 years is not worthwhile in a camera with an expected life of 10 years.

And that is about the "wear ratio" I see with my black M10 - after 2 years it looks about like an M6 did after 8 years.
