Finally a nice sunny day and a day off work. I went out to test the Voigtlander 35mm Nokton Classic 1.4 SC ii that I purchased almost one year ago and has been sitting since... Nothing special here, just a quick walk around the neighbourhood and used my car as a "model" since I didn't have anyone else...

Going for that filmic look paired with the M9 CCD sensor.

If the price wasn't a consideration, would folks go for this or the Leica Steel Rim Reissue? The CV has closer MFD, but the SR has lower distortion, better across the frame sharpness, and more of the glow (which I guess if you're buying either of these, it is for the unique character vs. something like an FLE). I personally like the warmer tendency of the SR vs. the cooler CV.

Better sharpness i doubt it. My Nokton 35/1.4 SC v2 is not as soft as its reputation that seems to come from the v1 of the lens. I have no experience with the reissue though as i have a 'Lux v2 already.

Fred Miranda’s review has shown better sharpness as well for the SR.

I test-shot a friend’s Nokton II in February 2023. I then tested a pre-owned Summilux Version II in June 2023, alongside a demonstrator FLE, at a Leica dealer. I decided that I could not justify the expense of either the Version II, because I believed the Nokton II to be better, or the price of a pre-owned FLE, but that I might eventually try buying a pre-owned FLE, as prices fell after the FLE II became more available.

I finally decided to buy the Re-Edition Steel Rim, new, at the end of June 2023, when Leica USA received a small shipment of them. I got a good one, and have no regrets. The very excellent sample images, posted at the Fred Miranda forum, many by Fred, himself, helped me to decide that I would spend the money for the Re-Edition Steel Rim.

Notably, the price of a new Steel Rim Re-Edition was the maximum I could hope to spend, without having to pay interest, and even that meant being very frugal, for the next six months. So, money WAS an object, for me, and remains so. My Steel Rim may well remain the only Leica M lens I ever buy new, rather than pre-owned. (I started Leica M shooting with a pre-owned Summilux-M 50mm ASPH, and a new original-version M10, made possible by a modest post-retirement financial windfall.)
