Sandokan Posted April 27, 2019 Share #44 Posted April 27, 2019 (edited) My impressions from Seville. Light here is lovely including in the evenings. The streets are narrow and as buildings are rarely over 3 stories, there are lots of streets with light shining along them or across them. It is a wonderful place for walking around and just getting lost. There is always a picturesque church around every corner Street photographers and city landscapers will enjoy it here. The late lunch and dinner hours don't effect me as I seem to get hungry later. Food is generally good. Hotels are more than I would expect to pay but there are lots of tourists. For lunch i had a burger with fries and 3 beers for €16 I am in the Macarena area which is north of the centre and not touristy but full of local bars and cafes. Lively and fun. Hotel Sacristía de Santa Ana, Alameda de Hércules, 22, 41002 Sevilla, Spain i have a standard not a deluxe room as that was all that was available. It is clean, comfy bed but bathroom is small. I will check out a deluxe room but may book this one for October. Boutique is a good way to describe it, with 3 stars and an ok buffet breakfast for just €12 On my first evening, I met two lovely ladies and got chatting to them both. One even had her own teeth, but the other one I gave Robert P’s number to. 🤣. I havent found a restaurant for dinner yet nor a lunch time meeting spot. However, be prepared for later than normal meeting times. One of the reasons is that Spain is actually West of the Meridien and so today, shadows were at their shortest around 230pm and not at noon, which means sunset is also later than expected. I was thinking that we should meet around 1pm for the lunch, in a tapas bar. For dinner, 9pm is most likely as few places are open before 830pm. How does that sound to folks? farnz Posted April 27, 2019 Share #46 Posted April 27, 2019 Sounds good to me, Ravi, and much as I'd expected in terms of eating later. Many businesses (used to) close for a couple of hours in the middle of the day to avoid peak temperatures and accordingly stay open a bit later than we're used to in the rest of Europe. It sounds like you're having a pleasant time, which is great, and I'd've liked to have accompanied you but for the New York Challenge. If you haven't already found it the Plaza d'España is an impressive place. When did you start your 'teeth-optional' match-making business?😎 Hasta luego, Pete.
Sandokan Posted April 27, 2019 Share #47 Posted April 27, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) Still looking for one for you Pete 🤓. Most shops close between 2 to 4 or later every day but stay open till 9pm. And i did enjoy my afternoon snooze today. It meant i could enjoy the evening more. Tonight i had a Turkish mezze as I have had enough tapas and Andalucian foods I am sure many of you now wish you were here this weekend, given the weather elsewhere. My phone photos will be posted later when i can downsize them, but gorgeous warm weather here with clear deep blue skies. I found two potential dinner places, one near Plaza de Espana called San Francisco and the other on the east side of the cathedral. I will check out two tapas places which i found just next to my hotel. My 3* hotel has rooms for €139 per night and www.OneShotHotels.com has them for €189 per night (it also has apartments for those that prefer that) but it is a 4* and more luxurious. I will look at a deluxe room in my hotel tomorrow. 1
Sandokan Posted April 28, 2019 Share #48 Posted April 28, 2019 So. Macarena area is my preferred location. To secure hotel rooms at a discount, i would have to guarantee them with my credit card but the discounts were not much cheaper than deals available on the internet or through booking.com I have booked a twin room at Sacristia with outside windows which has a larger bathroom than the Interior room I currently have. Other hotels in this area I liked were H10 Corregidor: http://www.booking.com/Share-WEAjL5 and OneShot Palacio de Correjon: https://www.oneshothotels.com/en/ ... bloody stupid ipad has lost all my writings! dinner is likely to be here: http://www.eltraga.com/ for lunch time meeting. The city centre place with enough seats outside is in a throughfare so not safe IMHO due to bag snatching. An alternative is outside the city centre by a 15 min walk or a short taxi ride. But they would section off our own area inside the restaurant. Two other alternatives i will have to negotiate in the Macarena area. 2
Sandokan Posted April 29, 2019 Share #49 Posted April 29, 2019 The rhythm of Spanish life - or my guide to how to adjust your body bio-rhythms to Spain. Don't try to live by the clock of your home town but adjust to local time of the sun. My biggest mistake (I now realize) when I visited Spain for work was to attempt to live by Swiss timezone ... up at 6am, breakfast finished by 730, lunch at noon, dinner ... well I was hungry by 7pm but Madrid restaurants opened at 10pm and so I snacked on sweets or other such rubbish. My most relaxing day was to wake up around 8-9am (sunrise is around 730am now, while it is 610am in CH) and have a leisurely breakfast after about 90mins of wandering around and that was a jamon iberico sandwhich with a couple of coffees. It actually left me feeling good, whereas a normal hotel buffet breakfast left me bloated as I eat it too early upon waking up. Around 2pm after more wandering I started getting jolly peckish, which was just as well as all the restaurants were open then and in full swing of business. Back to hotel around 330pm for a snooze, from which I woke around 5pm. Coffee in the hotel area and another walk around snapping photos until about 7pm when I had my first tapas and wine. Then as the light got beautiful, a few more photos and wines with tapas at interesting bars. After sunset at 930pm, it was time to call it a day and have dinner - which again happened to be when the restaurants were opening up. Leisurely walk back to the hotel took me to around midnight as there was always a bar to stop off at for a nightcap. Sleep. Repeat. I think I am ready to retire. 4

Gibbo Posted May 11, 2019 Share #53 Posted May 11, 2019 Rather selfishly, early October nearly sixty years ago, my Aunt and Uncle had a daughter who is minded to celebrate her birthday this year. Unfortunately this means that Lynn and I will not be able to join you all in Seville. Which is a shame!
andybarton Posted May 11, 2019 Share #54 Posted May 11, 2019 My father-in-law and mother-in-law had a daughter in 1959 too. We are celebrating her birthday in the US in October so will also have to take a rain-check this year.
