I've owned over 20 copies of various versions of this lens. It's hard to find one that has a perfectly drawn, single flare ring. This V1 177 does.

Welcome back, and nice shot :D

Excuse my ignorance but what's the easiest way to test (or shoot with) flare - open aperture facing light source I presume ?   I seem to have been lucky (or unlucky whichever way you look at it ) ... my flare count is extremely low on all lenses - certainly not these big rainbow arches that you more-artistic folks are throwing around :P .

I’ve cla’d many v1s and v2 infinity lock. They all looked like Frankenstein inside. No exception.

Many mid-run and late v2 copies need CLAs as well. My v2 that seemed very clean (when inspecting with a bright LED light in a dark room) came back from a DAG CLA making such stunningly clear images, I thought it was a different lens.

I may do the same, only to Wetzlar as DAG isn’t really an option.

Here's what I mean. That's another one of my Steel Rims. The flare isn't clean like the other. Too distracting for me to even try to pretend it's artsy or wanted !

I personally prefer when it looks like this. The Voigtlander Norton which is supposedly heavily inspired on the design of the pre asph, and which is also in newer condition, has a similar perfect ring with smooth edges.

How does the re-issue 35mm Steel Rim behave in this regard?

Perfect ring, obviously. Because JMF is correct in post 1656. But it is too soft wide open, and too modern when stopped down. They just didn’t manage to replicate it perfectly. Not even talking about the ergonomic and build quality which is far superior in the lenses from the 60s. At that price, I’d rather buy an original v2 than the reissue.

I haven't used the Steel Rim reissue, but what you describe is what I see with online samples. It seems to lack the underlying sharpness of the v2 I used to own (and I assume the original Steel Rim as well). It's that base layer of sharpness that makes the glow look so ethereal. Glow without critical sharpness just looks like a hazy vintage lens.

I remember you recently advised me to stop worrying about lenses and their rendering. 😉 That any Leica lens would surfice. Just shoot and create memories - and I agree. 👍🏻

Now we are talking too soft or too modern. As well as 20-30K OG steel rim lenses? Why? If it doesnt matter in your opnion? Sorry for being frank. 😉

From what I gather , Steven was saying he'd better buy a v2 than a reissue steel rim .

And I do agree .

One can still find a 35 summilux v2 pre asph for cheaper than a new reissue steel rim lens .

My 2 centavos.

I don't know how the Steel Rim remake compares to the original one though from what I've read, their rendering is very close even if different in terms of bokeh and contrast (Milan Swolfs' review is one example)

From my own experience with 4 different v2 (including a Titanium one) that I've bought and sold one after the other without being able to develop a solid relationship with any of them, the Steel Rim remake is the only one that I'll keep (as a Summilux 35 pre-Asph) and that I kept. It is a little gem and I prefer its rendering to the any of the v2 that I had (more glow wide open, similar stopped down and maybe a little more consistent and sharp). I also didn't notice the inferior build quality.

Again it is all subjective and the assessment might depend on the quality of the v2 sample that one has. By Leica standards, I could for once easily see variations in rendering and build quality between the v2 samples that I've bought and sold.

The SR remake is a keeper (for me)

@Steven Something weird is going on in these images. The last two you posted have a sharpened rectangle in the lower left corner with the rest of the frame being soft. In both images there are hard edges between the sharpened part and the soft part of the image. In the last image (with the lady in the pink dress) the sharpened rectangle is smaller than in the other one (sea and beach). Is this a scanner issue?

Thank you for pointing it out. I know what happened. The original file was too big to post. So I tried to take a screenshot of the original file to reduce its size, and I didn't wait for it to save properly. My bad, sorry.

Good thing the scanner is not the culprit 👍
