stuny Posted June 26, 2018 Share #1 Posted June 26, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) I shot this in the charming town of Hudson, New York, and forgot about it. I believe this is in her shop. Welcome, dear visitor! david strachan Posted June 28, 2018 Share #7 Posted June 28, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) She's attractive but the picture is too hard...needs softening IMO. And looks a bit over-red "flushed". I think you could be kinder Stuart... ...
stuny Posted June 28, 2018 Author Share #8 Posted June 28, 2018 WhippingPost & Allen - thank you. David - Thank you. I shot it in her gallery as she stood by the register and did no processing. I suspect I should have asked her to step near the window for soft, natural light.
Louis Posted June 28, 2018 Share #9 Posted June 28, 2018 I like her relaxed expression. I guess this is shot with V-Lux and not Q?

Fauxtog Posted July 30, 2018 Share #15 Posted July 30, 2018 Very charming and natural expression, really lovely. She seems delightful. But (and it's a BIG but...) you are right, as you say, you should have found a window light. I know you are aware of the picture's shortcomings, but for any aspiring photographer reading this, I'll just say this. Please take just one piece of advice. And that is never ever shoot portraits under shop downlights. Especially beautiful women. They really will not thank you. The lighting is always horribly unflattering. Step away from the camera and find better light. As you see, here it is giving a classic greasy looking highlight on her forehead and eye shadows that give her bags under the eyes. Two things most women are really not happy to have, or more importantly, have shown. And the mixed lighting (as David noticed) gives a very strange flushed skin balance. And I may be wrong, but the softness seems down to the image being unsharp, perhaps from a slowish shutter speed resulting in camera movement? Another good reason to find better light! Ok, rant over. Only my opinion and pet hate.
StS Posted July 30, 2018 Share #16 Posted July 30, 2018 Maybe a matter of taste, I try to find indirect light for portraits but window light is certainly preferred. Lighting aside, you captured a very nice smile. Stefan
stuny Posted July 30, 2018 Author Share #17 Posted July 30, 2018 Stefan - Thank you. Peter - Correct again. In Tarrytown, NY, shortly before that photo I took this one -- she was painting a portrait of a customer in her shop window and I liked the light on her. Too bad I didn't recall that a few minutes later. Welcome, dear visitor!
