The 48.8mm is from Wikipedia.

I would guess 51mm is probably the outer diameter, which IMHO isnt really of interest.

I think the L mount offers plenty space for any optic for 36x24mm and was designed for this even when the Leica T was released, but Leica never planned to support 45x30mm as well.

In hindsight I was a bit too optimistic in my drawing. The outer diameter of the L-mount is about the 48,8 mm as stated in Wikipedia. (I just measured it). The inner diameter is certainly not more than 45,5 mm. No idea if, with a flange-distance of 20 mm. to the sensor, they can expand the "virtual" diameter  to 51 or more mm.

So unless Leica wants to cram in a 45x30 mm sensor in a L-mount-camera in the way Sony did with a FF-sensor in their A7's, and by doing so create al kinds of trouble with the new lens design of MF-AF lenses, I don't see it happening.

The "theoretical" idea  of using the same L-mount for APS-C, FF and MF camera's is still nice, but mere a fantasy I fear........

But hey, Leica surprised us before, didn't they...............

BS.

It is well known that Leica and Panasonic cooperate closely  on technical matters. Open up a modern Leica and you'll find quite a few Panasonic-branded electronic components. Like you'll find a lot of Leica input in Panasonic lenses and camera design. The sensor on the SL is ordered by Leica with a Panasonic-affiliated company. Welcome to a world of globalisation.

But that does not mean that the SL was "made by Panasonic" by any stretch of hyperbole.

I had lunch with the owner of the leica store in KL.......... he is heading to Germany on Thursday for the Leica show which might have a new FF mirrorless body smaller than the SL but wit(30+ megawatts

Oh, yes I know. I would never switch to Sony, but the GFX-50s has everything I dreamed of. I tested all of my M and R lenses with a tented body and was surprised about the good results, if you are cropping or using the built-in FF framing mode. The addon EVF allows convinient shooting from a lower position and, and, and... But, its a bit more bulky, of course.

Hi There

Typically Fuji have very thick coverglass . . . make sure you test at infinity (where the rear element is closest to the sensor), not close up

Capturing the increasing and largely untapped (for Leica) video market seems to be one of the best bets available to Leica now. The SL and S 007 both started to do video, but halfheartedly and ultimately not viably (this despite the SL's class-leading EVF).

Whatever this new camera is, I hope it takes video seriously--not because I'd necessarily want to use it for video myself, but because this would greatly expand its customer base. Video makers generally can stomach higher prices too.

Just not sure Leica needs another, new another camera.

They could improve their customer base, and long term users, with much better service...and long warranties. For any faults fixed free and quickly.

Otherwise its only a few years for their demise i suspect...there are too many excellent cameras already.

There is a need for a compact FF mirrorless camera. Main question is to know if it will be a smaller SL, a larger CL or a modern M camera. I guess it will be a larger CL although i'd prefer a modern M camera.

Appreciate your hint, Jono.

Thanks,

A FF with a L mount with some lenses smaller than the SL lenses would be a nice addition.  Or an M camera with an EVF.  The rumor is "CM" and IMHO if that is right, the "M" must have some significance.   We will see soon enough.  This will be my first such "event" at Leica and I am looking forward to it.

So basically it looks like a big NOTHING. Just another rebranded compact Panasonic... Who comes up with those rumors?

The rumor is at least 2 cameras, C-Lux and CM, as discussed. Leica Rumors site predictions over the last 10 years or so regarding significant product introductions have been pretty accurate. We’ll soon see if that continues.... or not.
