Who has two M10 bodies?

The decision is not necessarily a logical one (binary, perhaps, but not logical). I have traditionally purchased cameras that look the same, and the majority of those have been black. My first Leica, however, a silver one, was given to me by a relative. Thus, I had no involvement in the choice.

My own preference is for black cameras in that they tend to be less flashy and (hopefully) less likely to attract attention. When I purchased my first M10, I ordered it in black. Some time later, I had a chance to pick up a silver one at a decent price, and price considerations overrode personal color preference. I've tried to justify the difference in color by thinking back to film leicas, where I used different color bodies; I also like to think that the silver has a more classic look. Of course, that may just be an effort to justify a decision as opposed to the reasons for the selection.

Thanks. I agree that binary may have been a better choice of word. But all in all, your process didn’t compare to the op’s decision Edited by lucerne

Call me Mr Confused! Or am I missing something.

How many body colour options are there. Is it not two?

Decision for second body would be simple and logically driven. No?

I wanted silver but got black. Now I’m getting a silver one. Logical enough to me but I’m not sure that falls under logic. Just personal taste.

I’m also going to use an Arte di Mano Aventino Half Case with Battery Door on my silver model. Going to see what I think about the half case once and for all.

The forum is full of confused people. Even after owning and using their gear, they often don’t know which cameras and lenses to take where.

Jeff

Maybe. I use 35 the most. It really is a great focal length for me. After that it’s a 28 or 50. Not very cool fusing for me.

6bit asks the question "who has two M10s and why", then bunch of people reply saying they have none or one ???

BTW I'm in the former category, none :)

...  My standard kit in the film days was a Leica m4 with a 35 mm summicron. And a Nikon ( several models) with 85 , f.2

Same here M4/35 but I used a 105/2.5 on a F (FE2 /F3/ F100 ) most of the time. While I had an 85/2, I preferred  the 105. My travel kit was simply the M4/35 with a 90 Tele Elmarit in my pocket and a few rolls of film in another pocket.

Later, in this century, I found a M9 and a Monochrom a nice working combo. Now it's the M10 and the same Monochrom. When the M10 version of the Monochrom comes out, I may have to do some serious horse trading as it would be nice to have the same body controls on both cameras.

Also, having two bodies was essential with the CCD generation of Leicas as having one in the shop for sensor replacement was a sad fact of life. The M10, on the other hand, is the Leica M perfected.

Andy, I get it, however I would prefer to voluntarily withdraw the money when I need it; not when I do not need it. See, it's like the kleptocracy is dictating our lifestyle, for better but more often worse.

And you had best behave young man or I'll unload my estate upon yours so you can deal with false wealth! :) Love ya, guy.

I have 2 M10 bodies both in silver.

Why ? 1.so I can shoot with 2 different lenses and not have an expensive accident while switching lenses during travel.

2. My wife can then take selfies of us with the spare while I document our travels. Wait, I believe she is the one documenting the journey while I pretend to be the photographer.

3. Same colors so I am not envious of her if for some reason she considers her M10 prettier.

Cheers.

I have my silver body in my hands now. I should have went silver to begin with. It's a beautiful camera. I am waiting for my dealer to get a 35 silver Lux in. I have a 7artisans 50 Silver mounted on it for the moment. I can already tell having two Ms is going to cost more than the camera.

Two M10, that's dream team :).

Stonewall Brigade, tpf1952, very curious that you two don't talk about their color(s).

I'm curious also, how you carry them ( without or in case, with long/short straps, on each shoulder or the two on your chest ?).

My first M10 was black (traded in a black M262), and my second M10 is silver. No strategy other than to have some variety.  I carry them in bags, obviously, and use regular Leica straps (green rope variety on the black M10, the other a vintage brown leather one to match the vintage brown leather half case on the silver M10 - classic look).

I am waiting for a special edition or an a la carte M10 before getting a 2nd M10. I am fortunate to have many cameras and those that I use extensively (for photo shoots) I like to have multiple of the same body (2 Mononchrom - a Stealth and an a la carte, 2 SL, 3 Nikon D850, 2 Hasselblad X1D, 2 Sony A7R3). I don’t like changing lenses and often have a dedicated lens to a body more or less permanently.

I just got a second M10 body (used).

Because 1) it showed up in the local shop; 2) I wanted a backup that matched my main camera in ergnomics and capabilities; 3) I now have both 21 and 28mm lenses, and need to mount a 21 external finder on one camera, and a 28 external finder on the other (I've never liked the built-in 28 lines on any Leica that has them - too hard to see with glasses, and too inaccurate).

How do you use the 135? Any viewing accessories, magnifier, etc?

Nope, no accessories (well, a diopter for vision) - both M10s focus my 135 (TE, last version) just fine, except for the usual occasional "black hole" between infinity (the hard stop)  and, say, 150-200 feet, where the RF base length is just too short (magnified or not). Although generally f/5.6 DoF solves even that.

Framing - I got used to the small 135 viewing area long ago. I think of it as a crosshairs for pointing, not "framing" as such. Heck, I could point my 135 accurately on the M8, which had no framelines at all. Just imagined a box 3x the width and height of the RF patch, with the M8 crop (would be 4x with an M2).

M8, 135TE, 12/2006 (first week I had the camera).

Experience, practice and habit are always the best tools. Until recent use of a +.5 diopter (and glasses), my Ms since the 80s have been used solely through the RF without accessories. But I’ve never tried a 135 on one. My M10 VF is so clear, however, that maybe I should give it a try sometime. The 90 and 135 framelines aren’t dramatically different now that I compare.

Back to the topic.... I used to own 2 same model film Ms at a time, and had 2 M8.2s. But I’m sticking with one M10 and a recently acquired original Monochrom (with new sensor) as my M kit.

And if you do, why do you have two?

Why not another brand (i.e. Sony a7R3)?

Are both M10s the same color?

Are you happy with have two M10s?

TIA

I have two M10 bodies in black.

I purchased my first Leica, the M10, in December 2018. After using it for a few months with the Leica lenses I purchased, Summilux 50, Summicron 28, 35, 75, 90 and Super Elmar 18, I realized that when traveling, changing lenses is inconvenient.

With my Fuji X cameras, I have two bodies usually with a 23 (35mm equivalent) and 50 (75mm equivalent) mounted in my Billingham bag when traveling on vacation. I also bring the 10-24 zoom. This kit has been to China, Japan and Europe over the past few years.

Now that I plan on using Leica for my travels, I purchased a second M10 body this month so that I can have the 35mm and 50mm or 75mm lenses ready to shoot. I am going to New Zealand and Australia in the fall and I will take my two M10s along with the 18, 35, 50 and 75 lenses. This all fits into my Billingham Hadley Pro bag comfortably.

Because of the high value of the Leica gear, I added a special rider to my homeowner insurance policy that provides zero dollar deductible replacement value for all of my gear regardless of the loss (theft, fire, accident or stupidity).

I plan on keeping my Fuji kit although I have sold off a few lenses that I don't use much. The Fuji XF zooms are excellent and much sharper than the Canon "L" zooms that I used to use on my Canon system. I sold all of my Canon gear after switching to Fuji about 5 years ago. I had enough money left over to pay for my first M10 body and Summicron 35mm lens.

Shooting with Leica M is definitely a different and throughly enjoyable experience. The image quality is spectacular once I learned how to focus quickly. Relearning how to zone focus has been challenging, but continual practice is vastly improving my keeper rate.

Buying a Leica has scratched a long-term itch to own the brand. Very happy.

Bud James

Another thought to add to my previous post.

Try Capture One Pro for raw file processing instead of Lightroom. The IQ improvement is worth the switch and learning curve.

And if you do, why do you have two?

I take photos every day for business. in 2016 i bought an M240 and some M Lenses. I ended up loving the system so much that i decided to buy the M10 when it came out as a backup in case either had to be serviced.

As it turns out the 240 has become the backup. I prefer NOT having 2 M10's as I like the video option of the 240 which i use on occasion. Both are excellent cameras.

Why not another brand (i.e. Sony a7R3)?

The M system works very well for me and I am already very invested in it. I have found that there is nothing i can not do with them, so I have NO need for other camera's with the way I am currently working.

Are both M10s the same color?

yes, Mine are both silver, it just worked out that way.

Are you happy with have two M10s?

Yes, I am happy with BOTH M bodies.

  • 4 years later...

Update: When I bought my second M camera body, it was an M Type 246 Monochrom, pre-owned but well-preserved, at a local camera store. I had two motivations, the first being that I had seen evidence that the Monochrom 246 was a very good low-light camera, and, well, I had fumbled and dropped my still-new M10, which produced no externally-visible damage, as it had been surrounded by a neoprene camera wrap, but one look at the LCD display revealed considerable internal damage, necessitating a trip to Leica service in NJ. I was heartbroken, and considering reverting to being an SLR-only shooter. The appearance of the M Type 246 Monochrom offered me a chance to get back onto the horse that had thrown me.

Thankfully, my M10 was repairable. It was returned to me, seemingly as good as new. Life was good. 🙂

The differing controls and user interface did not present a significant challenge. The slight differences helped me to distinguish, without looking, which camera I was holding. It had not been unusual for me to have two cameras with me, when I was using DSLRs. Having two Leica M cameras with me seemed similarly normal, and their smaller size, and the smaller M-mount lenses, simplified the task.

Eventually, a pre-owned, well-preserved M10 was available, on display at the local camera store. This was some time ago, probably more than two years ago, so, I cannot remember my specific motivation(s), but, for some reason, it seemed logical and justifiable to add another M10. I may or may not have traded something, for credit toward the price. I now have two black chrome M10 cameras. The first owner, of the second M10, had replaced the red dot with a black dot. Otherwise, the only difference is the serial numbers.

I do not see camera bodies as financial investments, but, knowing that I could sell that second M10, without losing much, made it easier to buy it, without remorse.

In a way, having multiple 24MP M10 camera bodies has seemingly made it easier to resist “upgrading” to an M10-R or M11. I seem to have some amount of loyalty to my “team.”
