... The SL just doesn't display the f stop in the data when viewing in LR etc....

I've looked through a DNG file created with the 16-35 using firmware 3.1.  The f-stop is in there.  If LR doesn't show it, that is Adobe's decision.  Also, distortion and LCA corrections are in place.  I have no idea whether these are final or still subject to evolve in 3.2.

A point for the paranoid.  I compared (using Linux cmp) the firmware 3.2 now on the  us.leica-camera.com site with the one I downloaded from the member site (behind a login firewall) two days ago, and they are identical.  So there was not any technical issue holding up the release of 3.2 .

Waiting for the great insight (and photos!) of Vieri and other members to pull the trigger on this one  :p

Indeed! Really curious to see how this compares to M primes, such as the 21 SEM and 28 Cron v2, both incredible lenses.

I suppose only a small number of these lenses are in the hands of owners. Mine arrives tomorrow - I will try and post some images after I have used the lens over the weekend.

The lens arrived today - and I plan to play a little with it during the weekend as well. Images will follow...

I’m beginning to wonder if there isn’t an issue with this lens due to lack of any postings and/or reviews. It seems really unusual relative to other releases.

My early impressions are that the only issue is availability and that it is as good as the other SL glass, which is to say it is absolutely class leading, with sharpness to rival prime lenses throughout the zoom range, at the expense of size and speed.

It seems to be turning up in quantities of one per shop, so the winners will be those who find a shop that has one and no waiting list.  The next question will be how soon the shops have their second and third copies...

My review is now published, see link below. I don't know about other reviewers, but I think people might slightly underestimate the time and effort that goes into doing thorough equipment reviews :) This particular review have about 150 images, and my website is in English and Italian, which takes more than a minute to do...

Enjoy! :)

Best regards,

Like most of us I have been waiting for the Super Vario since first announced. When I was in Paris 3 weeks ago I went to the Leica shop to see if I could get one before going to Barcelona but without luck.

After 2 weeks in Europe I ended my holiday in Abu Dhabi last week. My friend in Dubai was showing me around at the Dubai Mall, my eyes brightened up when the Leica logo appeared afar. So I walked in to see what they have on offer and the first product mentioned was the SVE 16-35, just arrived!

After 15 mins of paperwork, the lens is mine!  :D

Thanks for the review. I have the impression you did not really miss OIS for landscape photography.

I also think that 16-35 is a very useful range to go with a single lens setup. (weddings or similar)

At the same time I already have the WATE - which is also very small and a good companion to the 24-90.

So I am still unsure if I should add the 16-35 ?!

Early days yet, but so far very happy with the performance of the 16-35.
