I'm similarly aware of limited time here. At 67+, I know pretty fast by what floats my boat and what doesn't. I can usually figure that out before purchase. Saves precious time as well as money and frustration. Different strokes... it's all good.

I'm similarly aware of limited time here. At 67+, I know pretty fast by what floats my boat and what doesn't. I can usually figure that out before purchase. Saves precious time as well as money and frustration. Different strokes... it's all good.

I don't like hand straps......I will get the RRS L Plate and use my Black Rapid Sling..........Love that sling

Weight of the X1D is amazing.

It feels much more “M” than “S” series in that sense. The grip (handle and the material’s texture) of the X1D is also a delight.

 

In comparison, when I try the SL even with non-zoom native glass (its 50mm 1.4) it feels very similar in bulk and weight to an S + 70mm. For that weight, I personally can see little point in the SL when the S gives far higher image quality. I actually think the handgrip of the S is more ergonomic for me, adding to the feeling of “why not just use an S007”?

 

Image quality is not something I’ve “tested” at all, but the X1D and S 007 gave me a similar gut response of very deep color tonality, similar resolution capture etc. Both far eclipsing 35mm FF cameras like my Leica M 240 or M10. I did large pro-lab prints (30”x40” through to 40”x60” off both the X1D and S007). I disagree with people that think the S has to be superior for image quality, I just didn’t personally get to that same conclusion. That said, what is amazing is how much Leica have extracted in resolution from “just” a 38mp sensor.

 

The biggest difference between X1D and S007 are fairly clear in my view, ie, in order of Hassie X1D vs Leica S .....

 

1) “5x4’ish” sensor shape vs “3x2”

2) Lower weight vs heavier

3) Smaller body/lens vs larger

4) EVF vs OVF

5) Slower in use vs blazingly fast

6) Slower lenses (for now) vs fast lenses

7) Cheaper vs much pricier (new at least. A new X1D + 45mm is potentially similarish to a used S007+70mm)

8) Video (not 4K) vs 4k

 

Of course, as and when the Leica S gets a higher megapixel and newer sensor, combined with its amazing glass, then I daresay any views I currently have on image quality could easily change!

 

Just one thing in regards of SL vs S as a user of both: I am also drawn by the IQ of the Soo7 but then I also have experienced more reliable AF (specially with the advantage of moving focus point and face recognition) and IS which makes it easier to nail focus and exposure with the SL.

If you nail everything with the S its easiliy superior, but with the SL its easier to nail (IMO), thats why the S is not allways the clear winner for me.

I have not used either of these systems but am interested in digital MF, especially as I'm going to the US Southwest National Parks in March/April next year, and maybe Iceland later in the year. 

 

An X1D with 30, 45 and 890mm lenses is less than a new S007 body alone. The difference in cost between an X1D and 3 lens system and Leica S007 and 3 lens system pays for a lot of travel.

The S lenses are somewhat better and much faster, if you need the thinner DOF. The S battery lasts forever. The S has a 3:2 ratio. It's a DSLR, if you like that sort of thing. The 007 has a short maximum exposure time 8-60 seconds depending on ISO plus Leicas stupid mandatory long exposure noise reduction. The S is faster in operation and focusing although there's nothing wrong with the X1D focusing. The S has a single focus point. There's a longer range of lenses including a zoom for the S. This time next year that'll be even. We know there's a 100MP sensor coming that'll fit in the blad. Crickets from Leica regarding the S.

 

The X1D is smaller, lighter and cheaper. The files are epic. Shutter times up to an hour are selectable and LENR is optional. Great menus. X1D is still a work in progress. Start up is still slow (apparently will be halved in a future update. You can't review images in the EVF yet??? Limited to 1/2000 second with the leaf shutters (although the electronic shutter is much faster beware of rolling shutter due to the slow read time).

 

Personally the S stays at home when I travel and the X1D is my ultimate travel companion. It's just a brilliant travel camera. I can put the X1D, three lenses and Lee filters in a Peak Design sling bag. It's ridiculous.

 

Give me a yell in the new year if you want to get out and shoot them side by side for a day.

DON'T NEED THINNER DOF.  SPEED IS AN ISSUE BUT I SEE FASTER LENSES ON THEIR WAY.  EVEN IF THEY COST MORE, THEY'LL COST MUCH LESS THAN THE S-LENSES

SHORT EXPOSURE TIME IS A BIG ISSUE FOR ME AS I DO A LOT OF LONG EXPOSURES AND LOW-ISO NIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY.  THIS IS VIRTUALLY A DEAL BREAKER FOR ME WITH SUCH  LIMITED EXPOSURE TIME FOR A LANDSCAPE CAMERA.

 

 

The S is faster in operation and focusing although there's nothing wrong with the X1D focusing. The S has a single focus point.

SINGLE FOCUS POINT PAIN FOR TRIPOD WORK WITH FRAMING-FOCUS-FRAMING-FOCUS-ETC,

There's a longer range of lenses including a zoom for the S. This time next year that'll be even.

We know there's a 100MP sensor coming that'll fit in the Blad.

I THINK YOU'VE ALMOST SOLD ME ON THE X1D IF I GET AN MF DIGITAL SYSTEM (LIKELY) . IT'S 1/3 THE PRICE OR LESS OF THE S007 AS LENS NUMBERS START TO INCREASE, THE S  DOESN'T DO WHAT I NEED WITH RESPECT TO EXPOSURE TIMES, AND THE BLAD SYSTEM IS SMALLER AND LIGHTER WITH A POSSIBLE (SOON) 100MB SESNOR!
