I've spent the weekend playing around with my new 240 and the evf.

I'm happy to report that it all works perfectly. I see what some have said to be some lag between taking the shot while looking through the evf, but it seems almost negligible. If i had to guess, something like 1/8 or 1/10 of a second. But it could just be my own slow finger between getting the right moment and pressing down. Regardless it has been a delight to use. I still prefer the speed of just focusing through rangefinder. But i have to admit is a fun tool that is easy to get used to lol.

But i will only be using the EVF with my Voiglander 50 1.1 since it has some serious back-focus wide open.

Just out of interest, why not use the rear screen?

In bright light the screen can be almost impossible to use. Using the screen would mean I would have to wear glasses instead of using the dioptre correction on the rangefinder and EVF. The screen doesn't isolate the subject.

That said in certain circumstances I do use the screen, particularly when the camera is mounted on a tripod way above my head.

I have a silly question - is there any difference between using the EVF and the live view screen? Beyond what you actually look through/at I mean!

The only difference is I can't use the LV because I need glasses and see anything blur (besides, I hate taking pictures looking at a screen), while I perfectly use the EVF, in particular when light is dim.

Both the EVF and OVF are, I understand, designed so that you are effectively viewing at 2m distance. I can do this easily without glasses. For a screen held at arms length and closer I need glasses/contacts.

I need to see the M screen well in order to focus accurately. On the TL2 without the EVF it is not so difficult: AF means I don't need such good close vision; I can also compose reasonably well on the rear screen without perfect vision.

Edit: One can get used to a lot of things. I like the small size of the TL2 with no EVF, so I am teaching myself to use the rear screen again - and I use a smartphone quite a bit as well.

Adding to the excellent information given above...

What I like about EVF is that you can simply use EVF by pressing the button on EVF. You can do it even if your LV is OFF in menu. I keep LV off in menu since I don't want it to accidentally switch on.

Yes, and that makes it very easy to quickly switch between the OVF and the EVF.  My Nokton f1.1  tends to have significant backfocus at some apertures, so I switch between both finders depending on shooting aperture.

I've been very happy with my Olympus VF-2 on my M240. I have a couple of vintage Nikon (blasphemy, I know) lenses that I love the rendering of, and I'm able to use them via an F-->M adapter. Yes, the image quality isn't great by modern standards on the EVF, but for a hundred bucks (eBay) for the Olympus version, it's quite usable.

To my knowledge, the VF-2 is the latest EVF "model" that works on the 240.

WOW, I love the EF2 on my 240 and I have to say, I tried the Sony A7Rii 3 times and hated the EFF on it.

Hello BTW, newbie here amd to Leica, long time Fuji and ikon shooter with a few detours alk g tne way.

Yes there is a delay, but you can also just half press the shutter to clear it faster and move along fine. I think the Inge quality is actually quite good. While the 240 Live view is not bad, I don't like Live view, it's just faster and easier to focus through an OVF or EFF for me.

But where the EVF shines for me is I actually do not own a single Leica lens. I have 3 M Mount lenses, 2 Voigtlanders, the 15 and 35 F1.2, and then an 7artisan 50 1.1 all the rest are F mount. The EVF and focus peaking save the day for me for manual focus! Love seeing the Inge free I take it so I can simply half press and adjust framing if needed on a second shot.

Anyways, I think it's a highly valuable tool, especially if your not a previous Leica user.

It works well for me to Mark. And also has the horizon showing in the EF2.

I use the electronic viewfinder for close-up with macro lenses too. A great combo.

All best and welcome, good first post...

I've been very happy with my Olympus VF-2 or the Leica version EVF-2 on my M240. Purchased both used. The only thing I dislike is when I'm wearing polarized sunglasses I can't see through the viewfinder due to refresh rate of EVF screen. Live view does not affected in the same way. Sunglasses are corrected for sight. Using focusing assist lets me work around the issue without my sunglasses while I'm shooting. Find the EVF's very helpful when using 50mm noctilux ƒ1.0 and 90mm ƒ2.0.

Nothing to do with the refresh rate, just the type of LCD. I cannot see my iPhone through polarized glasses either. No problems with the CL EVF, BTW.

Not a silly question at all.  I research on this before I decided to buy an EVF.  The LV is very hard for me to focus because I have bad eye sights.  I can't see the peaking thru the LV especially when outdoors.

Thanks did not know that little tidbit. I have no problem with iPhone, I do have problems with EVF on other brand cameras.

I got a used one from Tamarkin last week and used it to video my daughter's PhD walk with a 135 lens on my MP240 and it worked great.  It also seems to work well for the 50f1.1 Nokton.  I still prefer using the rangefinder but sometimes technology works and works well (If it did not, we would still be using glass negatives or even film).

I gave the Olympus version of the EVF. I can handle the low res display. What's ridiculous is the length of the blackout after each shot take with it on. I'd only use it for landscape or macro.
