No matter which exposure metering I save in the user profiles the histogram shows the picture as "center-weighted" metered in playback. I mentioned this to my Leica dealer and he said his M-10 camera inventory

Had the same peculiarity. I have yet to hear from Leica about a solution. Camera FW 1.7.4.0

This has been referred to elsewhere on the forum.

Apparently the other two kinds of metering are only available if you are using live view/EVF.

If you have it set, for instance, for spot metering. Try using live view. You will find that spot metering is activated.

Switch away from live view and you will find that spot metering is deactivated and you are back to centre-weighted metering

wow...a bit surprised the dealer doesn't know better. Is this a Leica dealer?

If you are shooting with the rangefinder you only have one metering option.

. . . further the exposure correction that you might have set is only effective when you are in automatic mode. When you set the shutter speed manually to any value (except "A") then whatever exposure correction value you have set will remain unused but that value stays stored in the camera.

"If you are shooting with the rangefinder you only have one metering option."

Not true. You can put the camera in Live View and still shoot with the rangefinder to have other metering modes. Just don't look at the screen. ;-)

Ok but why?

When shooting without LV enabled you only have one metering option.

I do find it humorous that the dealer checked his entire inventory though.

I don't know what happens with the M240, but with the M10 as has been pointed out above, only the centre -weighted metering is available in all modes. The spot mode and multi-field modes are only available when live view is active

When I pick up my M-240 and go into the menu I get three choices which are Classic, Advanced and Classic with LV disabled.

Then if I choose Advanced, close the menu and press the Set button and go to metering I have three choices which are Spot, Center Weighted and Multi Field.

I can hear by the shutter click that Live View is enabled but the Live View screen is not on until I press the Live View button. In other words I can choose among all those metering methods and shoot with the rangefinder and never use the evf or Live View screen. Is it changed on the M-10?

On the M10 in the EVF Display Control menu choose LV Screen Target and set to LV disabled.

I was hoping that would allow the metering modes to work without running the display (to save battery) but it seems to disable the LV button completely. Am I seeing that wrong?

Humor me. If you don't mind.

Turn the camera on.

Do not touch the Live View button.

Make sure Live View is not disabled.

Press menu.

In metering choose Advanced.

Either half press the shutter or press Menu again to turn the Menu off.

Under metering choose multi field or spot.......your choice.

Half press the shutter or presss the Set button again.

Is the Live View screen on?

OK but you are in LV mode then. In classic mode, only center-weighed is available even if the (faulty) set menu tells the opposite. I have no experience with the M10 though.

Live View mode and Live View enabled are two entirely different things. Live View enabled allows you to change metering methods without having the screen image from the sensor on. Live View mode is where you use the LCD screen or EVF instead of the rangefinder.

Classic mode is classic mode and is heavily center weighted as it has always been.

I can use the rangefinder and have other than Classic Mode in operation without having the LCD screen on and find it really hard to believe that has been changed in the M-10.

First time i hear of such a difference but you are certainly right. In both cases the camera is even more sluggish and makes the same noise as a farm tractor :D. Just kidding but this is what i call LV mode in my poor vocabulary. YMMV.

As long as I can remember, classic mode is the only metering available with a rangefinder (since the M8 and before).

Advanced metering only works with Live View as it reads from the actual live view image on the sensor.

Try shooting three images (spot/CW/MF) with LV display off (feel free to enable LV...just leave the display off) and see if the exposures are any different.

They cant be as the camera will only utilize center weighted metering when the display is off. Furthermore the images will all display the CW icon as they should. This is no different with the M240.

I disagree. I just tried several shots again on the M-240.

Live View enabled but screen NOT on.

In Advanced you can hear the shutter open.

I shot three images of one each in Spot, Center Weighted and Multi Field.

All three images metered differently and the icon in each showed what the camera was set for.

You DO NOT have to use the LCD screen on or use the EVF to use those Advanced Metering choices.

James is 100% right.

If you choose (for instance) Muli-field in the set menu, switch to the main menu and change the metering mode from classic to advanced, the shutter will open to enable the advanced metering mode, but the LCD will remain dark. I just checked it on my M240.

ok I seem to remember this now...wasnt this enabled in a later FW?

Regardless of what you call it, LV is still on...and as I said earlier Advanced metering only works with Live View as it reads from the actual live view image on the sensor.

So the only benefit is the ability to turn off the screen...your still in LV mode and have all the disadvantages (or advantages) of LV.

Regardless...the M10 does not allow this with current FW. Not sure if its a hardware limitation or not.
