M 11 will be around in less than 4 years. The speculations and facts.

That is true. However, offset by the added lens versatility by such an M-L. I don't think it would be that complicated - it would only take a motion sensor.

Do you mean that no mechanical link would be necessary between the camera and the focus cam of M lenses? Just curious.

Leica should not follow the route of Sony or Nikon and try to build 'Swiss army knives'. I for one don't need an M with EVF, video etc. If this is important, Leica does have the SL. So why turn the M into an SL like?

Fully agree.  Leica should make an SM - an M mount SL the size of an M.  Lots of people here would love one.  Then, hopefully, Leica would keep the M11 free of EVF / IBIS / Auto Focus etc. and focus on improving the OVF (like they did with the M10).

Correct. The adapter could sense the movement (mechanically-sensor) and transmit it electronically to the camera.

Agree - with one caveat - make it universal mount (M-L) plus fully functional adapter (as LCT mentions), automatic magnification, focus confirmation, AF with L lenses, etc.

The only problem being that it might orphan the traditional M into a non-viable small niche.

It has worked for longer than most of us have been alive. Can't we just keep it? You literally have your choice of practically every other camera system in the world, including from Leica...why do so many people keep trying to change the M into something other than a rangefinder? Seriously, just get an SL, or a CL, or an S1, or a A7RIV or a Nikon Z7 or a Canon RF, or a Fuji X100V, or a Fuji XPro2 or a Ricoh GR or an RX2 or or or or

I am not against an M version with an EVF or a clip on EVF of higher quality, but there should be an option for people who like rangefinders...EVF's still cannot approach them for clarity or truly seeing the world as it is. They never will as they will always be a computer simulation, rather than a direct blast of photons into your eye...we look at so many screens all the time, isn't it nice to have a window on the world once in a while instead of a screen?

No, we don't need a M with an EVF - M means Messucher, and always will do. It would contaminate the whole of Leica's heritage and destroy its market if the company went down that route.

What we need is a SL in a body with the size, shape, controls and weight of the 'M' and with a simple mount that can accept M lenses and respond to turning the focus ring.

Wait a minute..........

😁

Whom are you referring to if i may ask? Rangefinders will stay alive for many years hopefully. Only question is to know if there is some hope for M lens users interested in compact full frame mirrorless cameras. I mean at Leica's of course. No SL, CL or TL camera can do that.

Just spitballing, but how about this lineup?

Don't shoot.

There is hop, my daughters (28, 34) often use my M6 cameras, usually with a 35 or 50mm lens to make B/W photos, they like going back to the roots, certainly influenced by the father....

Haven't we been here before (x a lot)? The complexity of building a camera and fully functional adapter for both M and (inevitably) adapted LTM lenses which is 100% accurate and reliable yet still all has the size of an existing M camera, all sounds like a triumph of wishful thinking over reality to me I'm afraid. Add in that it would need to achieve a lot of additional sales for Leica (in order not to steal sales from either existing (and presumably profitable) product lines) and I'd say its just pure wishful thinking. But don't let a reality check stop the fun discussion😁.

I guess the quiet shutter will be standard in all future models, also the standard version, because it's so well received. So I see no reason not to include it.

Here is an early morning, before caffeine kicks in, related to the beloved quiet shutter of the 10-P: has anyone enquired if the regular 10 be upgraded to the quieter version?

Yes it can. The camera can upgraded to an M10-P.

From Leica Rumors 2019/01/08:

"Jesko, the product manager for the M suggested that, of course, the electronic viewfinder is a nice addition for the M camera, however, they always see the rangefinder as the number one focusing system for the M. They mentioned Leica did build a prototype hybrid built in EVF M, but they put priority on the camera body design, as it made it too thick.

However, Stefan Daniel added to this, emphasizing there will always be a rangefinder version. However, they are looking at opportunities to have a second model with a built in EVF. They will never swap the rangefinder to EVF, but a second version alongside the rangefinder is very possible in the future."

I am increasingly seeing photographers using either EVF or rear LCD with the M10 series. A hybrid viewfinder would be useful, as long as it does not degrade the rangefinder experience of current cameras. An M camera with a built-in EVF would never replace the classic rangefinder but will bring more photographers to the M ecosystem. Also, I do not see a CL as an M with EVF.

Thanks, but I think after 35 years of use, I don't need Joel to explain the basics.  There are many other significant benefits of RF viewing with an M, obvious to generations of photographers. Many learn how to use the RF even for focal lengths that don't have corresponding frame lines.  But I guess for you the M isn't as powerful for 28mm viewing as for 135mm viewing, since there is less space around the 28mm frames lines.  🙄

Jeff

I actually love the 28 but I must admit my favorite way of shooting it is with the Leica 21 Brightline finder( thanks to the built in 28 frame lines). Makes for a "roomy" view. 😀

I prefer to exploit the power of the M RF/VF. 😉
