Why is the water red? Is this editing or a natural incident like algae bloom? (Serious question).

Kauai is volcanic. There is a thin layer of iron rich red dirt covering miles of black lava. What you see is countless thousands of tons of red dirt washing into the Pacific Ocean.

Whenever we get heavy rains — which seems to be happing more and more these days — the topsoil washes into the streams and rivers. We've been getting 5-10 inches of rain every day for the last two weeks. The land simply cannot absorb all of the water. This is compounded by streams and rivers that run through towns which grew from plantation labor camps. The rivers rise and flood the towns carrying trash, trees, and brush towards the ocean. Much of this debris ends up getting stuck under bridges and compound the flooding. Then there are thousands of cesspools which overflow making the ocean unsafe for weeks afterwards.

True, we are one of the wettest places on earth, but these rains are extreme. Three years ago we had nearly 48 inches of rain in a day and another 10 inches the following day. It took a year-and-a-half to repair the roads. Multimillion dollar houses tumbled into Hanalei Bay. This current storm has caused a landslide which covered the road and closed the north shore. The damage will take months to repair. Here, on the south shore, we had similar but smaller slides which closed our roads yesterday. Friends had water in their houses and will be spending the next weeks cutting up the trees and branches which washed up into their yards.

I am fortunate that I live high up on a hill. My driveway became a river rapids but nothing washed away. I've been trying to get out between the rains to take a few shots. My blue sky window today came between 8:30 and 9:00 this morning. I was pretty wet by the time I got back to my truck.

So yes, the water is red. The added saturation comes from using "profile — landscape" in Camera Raw which kicks things up a bit.

Orthogonal to photography, but related to your post... So sorry about all that is happening in Kauai, the community and its residents. Sending best wishes from the mainland that the weather softens back to the gentle rain & sunshine, that the floods recede Koloa, and the road to Hanalei opens before too long.
