Whenever the new M arrives, who's going to buy one?

I am absolutely positively not going to buy this new camera!  No way.  No how.  Never in a million years.

I don't need a new camera.  I'm happy with what I got.  More than happy.

The whole idea is silly.

In light of the fact that we now know the new M will be announced in January, I'd like to slightly change what I said in the above post.

What I meant to say in the post above was, I can't wait to dump this technologically retarded piece of junk.   :)

Whatever it is, please, give us a mature product and give us the option to buy it on announcement, not six months or more down the line.

Sensible request but as regards the request for "a mature " product, I think that's a tall order (for any company). The leica Q was in the hands of eager users for 6 months before the second and most important firmware update was released. In that period, some serious users were completely oblivious to features that weren't working as published and some implementations that were wrong. Reviewers seemed delighted with it - as released! Who would believe early reviewers any more?

If January 18th is the BIG day, and Xmas shutdown looms, manufacturing of a heavily beta tested and modified body would have to be in full swing right now. It is possible of course.

I know the M10 has been around since at least the first of this year.  Expectations are that it is going to be pretty "mature."

A Moral Tale.

A couple of centuries ago when I went to university as a new undergraduate, the Maths department proudly showed us a large room full of Brunsviga adding machines they had just invested in for our benefit. A magnificent array of the finest German mechanical engineering available, and definitely, without doubt a mature product. There was nothing better.

Later that year Clive Sinclair announced the Sinclair Scientific calculator, a snip even then at £19.99, though you had to assemble it yourself. Those adding machines were instant scrap metal.

Be careful what you ask for!

Edit. Of course, there were always people who said adding machines were quicker, more reliable and no one needed more than 9 significant figures anyway. The same people now probably use film cameras (ducks and runs for cover).

rk but not that far. Later that year Clive Sinclair announced the Sinclair Scientific calculator, a snip even then at £19.99, though you had to assemble it yourself. Those adding machines were instant scrap metal.

I remember a schoolfriend who once suggested (at that time) that at some point in the future calculators would be cheap enough to sell in bubble packs. I've actually seen one drop out of a Christmas cracker, so he was a little off the mark but not that far. I cannot though, remember the last time I bought a calculator - and there is one on my (now old and worthless iPhone 3 - still works) anyway. My point, well despite such technology coming and going, the Leica Rangefinder still remains in production having absorbed (somewhat grouchily) the advent of digital. Well designed, effective products survive remarkably well. Substantially changing them needlessly is the biggest risk IMO. Mind you I still use a fountain pen (and there are lots still on sale despite the technologically superior array of writing products which have thoroughly usurped them ..... ).

Okay, if this new M10 has 36 MP and can make a good file at ISO 3200, I'm in. I passed on the M240 simply because I love using my M9 and the M240 didn't offer enough additional horsepower to warrant making the change.

36 MP is important to me because I often need to print at 24x36 inches and don't want to carry around my S2. The other bells and whistles like live view and EVF would be nice but are not essential.

Highlight mine..

Leica should upres the 24MP file to 36MP and apply little bit of sharpening before writing to DNG. No one will ever know if only modified DNG is available as output. Something like digital correction of lens.... Won't that satisfy lots of hungry users? ;)

(BTW, today I am getting lots of brilliant ideas. I should note them all down). :D

The first computer I used was in 1967 (IBM 1401) and had 16K memory. The thing was the size of a tennis court and needed air conditioning. The disk drives were the size of washing machines.

Most smartphones have GB of memory, need no hard disks, and cost very little.

Times change, technology changes. The M will change. Embrace change as change is good ... or we'd still be Neanderthals.

I look forward to seeing what comes next. Should it be crap then I can wait until snags are sorted.

Life goes on. Meanwhile the M-P 240 is brilliant. Definitely fit for purpose. I hope the next model improves on it.

Faster cars are better than slower cars. Since cars have been around for a fairly long time by now, why doesn't anyone in my neighbourhood drive a supersonic car?

No roads fit for supersonic cars exist, hang one, there is low resistance air crammed with airplanes, ok mostly subsonic.

I've revised my "what do I need to buy" parameters. Make me this and I'm in.

* 36MP-42MP

* Same battery

* Thinner/lighter.

* No LCD screen. (to be thinner and lighter.)

* Menus and image review via the included clip on EVF which has high resolution, is hinged and a GPS built in. Focus possible off centre.

* 30 minute exposures and no mandatory LENR.

* ISO 100 with an ISO 50 pull like the SL.

* Electronic first curtain shutter when using the EVF.

* M app for the phone for remote shooting and view like the SL.

plus extra points for IBIS. :)

Rover attempted to start the trend in 1949 by fitting a jet engine...

Eventually  optical focusing (rangefinder) will disappear from favor. How can anyone deny it? So best to look to the present in which it is already largely out of favor.

Next? An entirely over-priced digital clone of what?
