Hang on....There is no usb port and no mention of a usb port on the grip.

Has anyone read anything about this?

This is totally and utterly damning if true, it's a fundamental need for a pro. Tethering with wifi is an absolutely not an option.

No usb what I can see and it does make sense if your goal is to simplify. Sorry.

Actually according to the technical data PDF: "(width x depth x height) approx. 139 x 38.5 x 80mm".

Far cry from 33mm!

The technical data measure all parts which protude from the body: display, thumbs-wheel, frame selector etc.

If you look at the technical data for the M-A, it says....."Approx. 138 × 38 × 77 (length × depth × height, in mm)"

If there truly is a 2-stop improvement vs. the M240 and the WB is also better, then this camera is a good step forward in terms of IQ.

General ergonomics also seems better thought through.

The EVF is the biggest letdown.

Jono seems to be OK with it (while realizing it is no Q or SL). In fact he mentioned that he can focus without using magnification just fine. It means resolution is there. You just have to accept the lag, which btw is improved from M240.

Some of you wondering about upgrading from your M240 make me smile. I have an M8.2. Full frame will be a big upgrade for me. Altho after getting it new in 2008 and clicking 120,000+ frames it's like an old friend. Anyway, the M10 looks pretty good. I was hoping for black paint and for that beefy M240 battery. BTW B&H is listing it at the M240 price - US$6595.

Andreas's blog confirms this. Given that tethering with an M is always going to be a limited exercise (control of aperture or focus is not physically possible, and I see that control of shutter speed is not allowed), I'm not surprised they have effectively written off the M for studio. There'll be no MF grip either. You'll hear this again: the M10 is not a jack of all trades. It's not the camera for your sort of pro, but I'm sure pros of other flavours will manage.

Black paint - for the M9 - was a step backwards from the black chrome of  the M8. I am happy the new model comes in a black chrome version by default and not just as an "uprade" in a future M10-P version.

Even if the smaller battery for the M10 is weaker than the M 240 battery, it will be an enormous "upgrade" from the M8 standard.

Overall, I like it, though it seems to some degree to have been intentionally positioned so as not to totally pee off anyone, videographers excepted. Nothing strikingly revolutionary but some significant additions resulting in a more refined package compared to its predecessor.  Basically four years of  Moore's law sort of improvements wed to an appealing, perhaps finicky, set of detail adjustments.   Much, at least in my case given I've been holding off on a second body, will depend on just how valuable the sensor and OVF/EVF improvements are. That and whether or not its worth the delta over the going rate for initial wave of  M240s that will shortly be coming to market.

Tethering is not to control the camera it's to transport files to the computer, live, while shooting. The M has been perfectly capable of this and it has worked very well. This is not good enough at all!!!!!!

I'm about to turn over the fucking tables this is outrageous and not acceptable to existing M users!!!

The M240 you had to buy a {edited} grip to get a usb port. Now you have to buy a {edited} SL body?

Leica just shelved the M for Pro use. Seriously not cool Leica.

and the eye-relief has been increased by 50%, which is great news for anyone who wears glasses.

Could some kind soul please explain the above to a simpleton?

TIA

Same simpleton here.

I learned in the meantime that the eye relief measures the distance your eye may be away from the ocular of an optical instrument and you still can see the whole frame of the ocular. Increased eye relief means that your eye may be farther off. Since glasses do not allow the ocular to touch your eyes a larger eye relief is better if you wear glasses.

Though I read in the review by Sean Reid the new finder of the M10 does not make so much difference.

Think in terms of the Nikon HP view finder. When I first put my eye to a Nikon D2HS I thought I was going to fall into it!

Imagine a very wide angle of view finder but with increased viewing magnification for focusing. you don't need to be right up to the viewfinder to see its extremes. Great if you wear glasses. If you don't, then there's lots of space in there.

Pete
