I can see the "Mandler effect" in most pictures here, especially when shot wide open. But I think many people have their own interpretation of what it is. I would like a thread where members pointed out exactly where in the picture they thought the Mandler effect was, and tried to explain why they think this part is special. But these things are certainly not easy to put into words.

For me, the Mandler effect is the ability of his lenses to be tack sharp while simultaneously creating a barely discernable soft glow around the image elements. I've always thought this was what people meant when referring to the"Leica glow." At wider apertures the glow becomes more pronounced.

Thanks! For me, the Mandler look is primarily the irregularity and unpredictability in the defocused areas. But there is certainly also something in the focused areas: the gentle contrasts. Probably caused by the same thing that you describe.

I could not agree more. It's one of the best I've seen on this forum.

Brent, You are quite generous. Appreciate and thank you the encouragement. Have been on a steady 'run' to fill my knowledge bank and experience having started my Leica rangefinder journey only 18 months ago. Greatly admire your work. As an aside, spent most of my formative years in Wisconsin, so the sights of Madison were enjoyably 'memory-genic'. :0)  Cheers. Patty

One of my favorite reads, right behind another roadside attraction. Superb image.

Thanks! Loved this book which I found by happenstance and am sure it corrupted me in my youth. Find the song often being sung in my lobes every now and then. Best, Patty

Absolutely first rate work. This is the kind of image that will always keep b&w photography first in my heart.

Thanks Brent! Love the color. But have found it is B&W that focuses my mind and makes the heart sing. A good day to you sir. Best, Patty

Wonderfull. The black lines in this doubleportrait, great! Like a charcoal drawing, Degas would be very happy with it. I bet the M10M would not give this effect.
