I just bought a 50mm Summilux Version 3 (1999) in beautiful condition, so today I've been walking around the neighborhood looking for subjects that show the Mandler Magic with the lens wide open. So far I'm happy with the performance, although the sharpness is not what I've gotten used to with the 50mm APO Summicron. I do much prefer the bokeh of the Summilux to that of the Summicron with both shot wide open.

That's one of my favorite lenses too. I also combine it with a modern 50, but like you, I much prefer the bokeh of the Mandler lens.

I'm finding that the out of focus areas render very similar to the F1 Noctilux and 75mm 1.4 Summilux but unlike those lenses the 50mm Summilux is a lot smaller and lighter as well as being sharper at maximum aperture. I think this will also become one of my favorite lenses.

That's exactly my experience too.

Both photos are superb. Excellent examples of the beautiful bokeh combined with subject sharpness.

I love portraits like this. No "smile for the camera," just relax and be natural. This is really fine work.

I'm convinced that the 50mm APO Summicron is the best lens currently available in that focal length. In terms of bokeh, however, it's my opinion that the Mandler designed lenses produce the most appealing and artistic out of focus areas. I recently acquired a 50mm Summilux Version 3 pre-asph lens specifically for that reason, so today I did some side by side comparisons.  I'm aware that some members consider this kind of unscientific testing to be worthless, and in some ways I agree.  I'm going to post them anyway because I think they do illustrate the unique characteristics of each lens. In both cases the 50 APO is the top image and all four were shot at maximum aperture. The "Mandler Magic" is most evident in the last image.

I think "perfectly smooth" is what many people think of as the ultimate bokeh, but personally I think that is just boring. The bokeh needs some character too – a little irregularity and unpredictability. That's one of the reasons I love the Mandler lenses. 😉

Ye old swimming hole.  Every time I threaten to sell this lens, it speaks to me and says, "no way". :0)

Once I made that mistake, I sold my 35mm Summicron v.4. I regretted it a lot, and shortly later, a new copy was back in my bag. 😄

A picture I took with my new copy the other day. I love to shoot fully open to bring out the gorgeous Mandler bokeh, but sometimes I stop down a little too.
