mehtasunil Posted June 4, 2017 Share #263 Posted June 4, 2017 MTF charts aside, I have been very happy with the original 400 DO. It's been great other than when shooting directly or nearly-directly into the light. I did not take it on the last trip but did miss the 400 mm reach on occasion (and wrestled with my son for his 200-400!). I like the Canon 200/2 for wildlife - a very unusual choice - because it lets me photograph in light when other lenses have to be put aside. It's a pound heavier than the 400 DO II though! Canon for wildlife and Leica for everything urban and day-to-day works for me. Getting yet another system would be too complex, although I would certainly make an exception for a good medium format for selected wildlife work. I thought the Hasselblad X1D may fit the bill; it did not. I must acknowledge my harsh view of the X1D was based on a few days of use and may reflect my limitations as much as the camera's. Here's a picture taken in Kenya with the X1D: Pls share link to your images or web page..will appreciate.

steppenw0lf Posted June 25, 2017 Share #267 Posted June 25, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) Come to central europe - here it is unbearably hot since a week or two. This is even bad for health - people die because they cannot cope with the heat. There are never more death cases than during a heat wave. While rain is probably good for health - leaving a feeling of freshness (coupled with a mild depression). Come here and see which you prefer .... (Sorry I felt too weak to haul around the camera). tritentrue Posted June 26, 2017 Share #269 Posted June 26, 2017 (edited) SL with Nikon 300mm PF + TC-14E III + Novoflex SL/NIK, (428mm) MF mode... Using this combination in MF mode seems to drain the battery much faster than using AF-S mode. Twice during five-hour walks with less than 100 shots taken I've ended up with a flat battery (auto power off set at 2 min). Welcome, dear visitor! Edgy01 Posted June 28, 2017 Share #270 Posted June 28, 2017 So far I am having pretty good luck with my various adapters for my non-SL lenses. I have about 5 M lenses from 21mm to 90mm, a 50mm R lens and doubler, and about 40 Nikkor lenses of various vintages, from manual focus non-AI lenses to AF-S lenses. (I have no E lenses). I have the following adapters: Novoflex Nikon to Leica M adapter as well as a less expensive Fostasy version that essentially does the same thing. Novoflex LET/LER adapter to mount my R optics directly to the SL. Leica M to SL (18771) electronic adapter Finally, the Novoflex Nikon E to SL (which appears to be useless as I have no E lenses by Nikon--and misled by Novoflex to buy it). With all of the Nikon lenses that I have, only one so far has been inconsistent to mount, and I will simply forget trying--the 2.1cm f/4 Nikkor-O from 1959 which features a mirror lock-up need for mounting on the Nikon F or Nikkormat. I have not tried my Fisheye-Nikkor 7.5mm f/5.6 yet. I don't anticipate a real issue with it. My most massive package is the SL with the Nikon AIS 13mm f/5.6 ultra wide lens. It fits easily and works well. (It is probably my most favorite lenses--I like wide angle!) The focus aiding works pretty well. Better than I anticipated. With my Noctilux 50mm f/1 (Leitz version) it works extremely well. I'm getting rather adept at focusing the Noctilux with the aperture set at 1 and then quickly shutting it down if I need to. I am converting my Leica lenses over to the 6-bit encoded type soon so I hope to speed up lens changes so that lens type is more rapidly and automatically fed into the EXIF system of the SL--all good. The Novoflex R to SL works well, with the SL noting that an R lens is being mounted. It's fairly similar to the mounting of M lenses but without the benefit of the 6-bit encoding. What I would really like to see out of Novoflex is a Nikon to SL converter that accommodates the Nikon line of AF-S--Silent Wave--lenses, which are quite prolific out there. The Novoflex Nikon E to Leica SL adapter is fairly useless as it only works with the electromagnetic aperture system lenses by Nikon, which are few in number. Despite the Novoflex claims (they publish a list of workable lenses for that adapter) the list is wrong. What within the AF-S technology is not translatable to the SL? I understand that the earlier pre-AF-S lenses that require a camera-mounted focus drive (found at the 7 o'clock position on Nikon bodies that have this feature) will never function in any AF mode because the design precludes a simple adaptation to the SL. tritentrue Posted June 28, 2017 Share #271 Posted June 28, 2017 My Novoflex SL/NIK now rests in the back of the dry cabinet, replaced by an off-brand Nikon to M dumb adapter coupled to my M to T adapter. The only benefit was EXIF data; with abysmal autofocus capability, long start-up/wake-up times, excessive hunting, and markedly decreased battery life among its liabilities. The grab shot below was made using the dumb adapter, and would not have been possible with the SL/NIK as the bird would have been half a kilometer away by the time the camera was ready to shoot. The SL/NIK is officially a "white elephant" until or unless Leica chooses to rescue it with a firmware update. And I would not fault Leica for choosing not to put any more effort into this device, which fails at that which it purports to do. Lesson learned. Welcome, dear visitor! helged Posted June 28, 2017 Share #272 Posted June 28, 2017 ...The only benefit was EXIF data... In addition, for electronic lenses (e.g. Nikon 300mm f4 PE, Nikon 400mm f2.8E or Sigma ART lenses in Nikon mount), the lens aperture is fixed when using manual adapters, either to fully open aperture (default) or to a pre-selected aperture by removing the lens from a Nikon body when simultaneously activating the depth-of-field preview button. Therefore, for static/quasi-static objects, I prefer and typically use the electronic adapter. For action shots, the manual adapter is the way to go. No free lunch - at least as long as Leica doesn't offer long-ish lens(es) for the SL. (And should Leica offer long lens(es) for the SL-system, the lunch will - as we all can imagine - be everything but free...).

steppenw0lf Posted July 7, 2017 Share #275 Posted July 7, 2017 (edited) You can use a different stack - going across EOS or Nikon mount. Fotodiox has V to EOS adapter (and V to Nikon adapter), then you can mount this with a mechanical EOS to Leica T adapter to the SL (or with a mechanical Nikon to Leica T adapter). It is not terribly comfortable, but at least a way to attach the lens. https://www.adorama.com/fdhassyveosp.html Spending a bit more money, you can even get a shift-adapter: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Fotodiox-Pro-Shift-Adapter-Hasselblad-V-Mount-Lens-to-Canon-EOS-EF-EF-S-camera/391781158185 Welcome, dear visitor!
