Leica SL Firmware Suggestions

OK. This one is annoying me.

EVF behaviour. Sorry Mr Leica. What the heck were you thinking??

- In manual mode with a flash in the hotshoe and the exposure preview function turned on  you don't get the exposure preview function. Turn the flash off and it works as it should. AAAAARRRRRRGGGGGHHHHH!

- No user adjustment for the EVF. You can push it brighter or darker using exposure compensation (even in manual mode) but there NEEDS to be a function to allow the user to adjust the brightness and the gain shouldn't be tied to exposure compensation and it NEEDS to be consistent in all shooting modes. The last thing a working photographer wants is different functional behaviour in a different exposure mode.

You had it right on the M(240). Why not just do that? Auto EVF gain for composing/focusing with exposure preview on a half press of the shutter button. Simple, elegant, effective.

The way the SL is now with the EVF and flash makes me not want to use it at all.

While we're at it:

- Fix the flash failure to fire in A mode between 1/60 and 1/360 of a second. P and T aren't even avail;able as workarounds with M lenses.

- Make the useless dial in A T and P modes a direct exposure compensation dial.

I've taken the Sl on a few paid gigs now and it's been a frustrating experience, every time because I NEED the flash system to work. The way it is this camera isn't even fit for purpose.

Clearly need some firmware updates to fix the flash behaviour.

Plus, it'd be great if the flash TTL exposure compensation could be dialled in from the back of the SF40.   The dial is there but does not seem to talk to the SL firmware.

Regards

Peter

Ability to set minimum ISO in Auto-ISO?

In Auto-ISO, almost all images will be taken at ISO 50, which is a pull ISO (I understand). I like the Auto-ISO function, as within the set ranges, it's just one less thing to think about. But I don't want all my pictures taken at ISO 50 ...

Although ISO 50 is nominally a "pull" setting for this sensor, having compared hundreds of ISO 50 vs ISO 100 images, there is no downside at all to using it. Either that or I'm just not critical enough to see a difference.

24-90 no infinite distance scale, the stars can not beat the focus of the problem in the night.

1.3 firmware need to wait how much time, can not turn off the automatic noise reduction, can not wait to sell SL

If I am understanding you properly, you don't like that the lens has no infinity mark, but that is obviously not going to change.  Isn't it possible to focus on infinity though?  And auto noise reduction might be changed in a firmware revision, but that is not for sure.   These are things that were not hidden when the camera was announced for sale.  If you think you made a mistake, I am sure there are plenty of people who will be willing to buy yours.   Every camera I have ever had (since 1959) had some aspects I liked and some I did not.  There just isn't one out there that can satisfy everybody.

Autofocus lenses don't like hard stops at infinity. It's not good for the motors. Unfortunately it's something we have to live with. The SL does have great magnification so MF shouldn't be a big problem for stars.

I agree that noise reduction should be selectable though. Often speed is more useful than ultimate file creation.

Personally, I'd like to see the 6x7 Aspect Ration added to the SL options, same as the M240 has. I'm sure it is not really a hard job technically, and would make me, and those (I assume not many) that shoot this AR in film very happy. Thanks. m.

My current wishes and expectations for a firmware upgrade (I only have the camera for a couple of weeks now (using it with M lenses)):

1. Allow to assign the two dials for a toggle between Metering Modes and selection of Exposure Compensation (at least the top one for this) in A Mode (I have so far programmed some of the buttons to select for this). Perhaps this functionality is already available, but I did not find it.

2. Make startup time FAST, and especially wake from sleep REALLY FAST (both can take 2 seconds)! Perhaps this has to do with the SD cards I am using (which are current). But I think with 2 GB of buffer the camera should figure out which cards are in it while I am already using it. My M is really fast in this respect.

3. Maybe I am mistaken, but I think sometimes my EVF flickers a bit initially (as if it needs to warm up) and only then becomes stable. Anybody else has this observation? I had the same impression with a couple of different demo cameras I had tried before. Maybe the focus peaking makes me think this way.

4. Return the spot circle in Spot Metering mode to central position (or allow me to chose so) after having switched to a different metering mode and back again. I know there are probably pros and cons to keeping it where it was. So perhaps give us the option please (return to central vs. keep previous position).

5. Not sure if this is a camera problem or a lightroom problem. But when taking photos is rapid sequence, and the camera is set to DNG and JPG, when I load them into lightroom, sometimes the JPGs are not next to the according DNGs, but further down on the "filmstrip", so somewhat scrambled. As if the camera does some processing when shooting fast but looses the order of the files until it catches up again. This is a bit annoying when you want to compare DNG and BW side by side. If somebody knows how to fix this please let me know. My M has the same problem. - Thanks.

Change the sort option in the grid mode to sort by filename. The default is to sort by added order which is a pain.

Well, here is another new reason that Leica needs to fix the file numbering/folder creation process.  I was using the SL to make videos of my daughter's high school musical last night.  Can't help bragging--my daughter played Maria in the Sound of Music.  Once a given file reaches 4.26GB in size, the SL automatically closes out the file and opens a new one.  OK, I can live with that.  Post processing will allow me to stitch things together the way I want.  But halfway through Act I in the middle of my daughter's solo, the SL decided it needed a new folder not just a new file, and it couldn't keep up with the video stream.  Despite having one of the fastest cards currently made, I got an something like, "Card not fast enough--recording ended."  Lovely.  Nothing else went wrong.  Only the one error--when a new folder was created, the processor needed more time than it had to setup the new file structure for some reason and I lost part of the song.

Note tor Ram Man - don't sell your Nikons.

Seems like a lot of problems with "The digital camera that you have been waiting for"

Oh sorry you like to work round problems and are certainly not an "Autofocus dependent machine gun photojournalist" are you?

Did you just wake up in a snarky mood?
