Is this the Marumi with 77mm filter thread ? Or is there a bigger one ?

Did you ever use it with the 90-280 ? (Did you see any vignetting ?)

82-77 step down ring. No vignetting issues at any focal length on the 28-90 and image quality excellent...... but....

performance on the 90-280 is flaky ...... difficult to lock focus at >160mm and image is very soft at longer focal lengths.

DOF is non-existent anyway even at f11/16 so not as usable as you might imagine.

this a recognised issue ..... marumis in particular .... they do not seem to be optimised for longer focal lengths. (less trouble with Raynox and some others if I recall)

the +3 is marginally better but still has issues over 200mm.

For longer focal lengths than 150mm Canon recommends the 500D which is 2 dioptres and "forbids" the 250D with 4 dioptres.

It is also available in 77mm filter thread. Maybe I give it a try.

For me 100 to 200 would be the useful focal lengths. I am only fearing vignetting, but you have not noticed any with the Marumi (?!) and they are probably of equal thickness as the 500D.

I assume at 90-100 it works, but the results are quite soft ? Do you have an example ?

Up to about 150mm on the 90-280 it seems ok ...... above than you get the sort of effect fashion photographers used to look for by putting vaseline on the lens ......

No examples as I just don't bother with it on the 90-280 ....... just too difficult to use compared with the 24-90.

This must be the first official „salmon shot season :) “ for the SL as they are traveling back upstream to their spawning grounds. Below is an example taken in Moricetown, BC, at the Bulkley River rapids, with the R 280/4 (using the Novoflex adapter and a monopod) at f/5.6 1/3200 sec ISO 200. The close up is a 1:1 crop and the other picture gives a situational overview (24 mm) taken from the same position as the 280 mm shot.

Returned last evening from Carmel after a sensational week of uninterrupted automotive saturation. Left all M bodies at home and decided to shoot with the SL only, with both of the SL 'system' lenses andf a handful of M Summiluxes with the M adapter, which I never did mount & use because the SL glass did everything I asked of it superbly.

The SL performed flawlessly, taking over 4000 DNG images, didn't miss a lick, exposed and focused perfectly, and in general provided images that I feel are at least as good in every respect as anything my M lenses on the M240 body can produce - except the M 246, of course.

I can report that two fully charged batteries will see you through a long, full day of about a thousand DNG images, with minimal 'chimping' during the day - I have the review setting set at 5 seconds and view the histogram after every exposure - no exceptions.

I can honestly say that I am completely satisfied with the SL, that the much talked about and often criticized weight & bulk of the package just isn't a factor worth discussing ( if anything, I find it better balanced than my M 240-P with 90mm Summicron Apo.Asph.) and the two dedicated SL lenses are an absolute delight to use. When the 90-280 is in the camera for motorsports purposes, it's always on an RRS monopod with their monopod head.

Below please see some random individual images, all taken with the SL 24-90 and 90-280 lenses.

Comments and constructive critique welcome.

Final image of this series........100% enlargement of a relatively small portion of the previous image - please note resolution and detail in the protective netting by driver's helmet........mind you, this is a compressed jpeg 259 kb internet image. I'm very impressed with the sharpness, color, contrast, ease of handling, I have found my motorsports camera / lens combo.

Thanks for looking,
