mjh you do not have to leave another snide remark, one is plenty enough.

I’m having a lot of fun anyway. “Fun, fun, fun till her daddy takes the t-bird away” – which will be on 20 October.

Good for you though I think you overestimate how many people could give a toss about the forthcoming announcement.

There is a good chance this new camera will work well with M Lenses so I'm quite excited about it. It will complement my M kit nicely and I'm very excited about the possibility of 4K motion (with Panasonic's involvement I imagine it is going to be solid), native, with my M lenses.

Bring on the 20th.

Leicaflex SL w/o flex or Leica SLR w/o R = just a mirrorless camera...

correct ...... as mirrorless baby S. T Mount, uses the same T-M adapter for M series lenses, T-R for Legacy R lenses,  similar AF lenses ......

can't be called an M because there won't be an 'M' in it ......

I suspect Leica have come to a developmental dead-end with the M line ..... like the old Film M's ....... and the replacement will just be 'better' rather than an evolutionary change ...... using a different lineage to implement the needed changes is a logical solution to avoid ruining an iconic product but still pushing forward and keeping those who want more than just a RF ......... and haven't deep enough pockets or strength to hump a full S System about .....

What about a digital rangefinder? Would remain a true M and M lenses would have a truly new body...

If you think carefully about how this would be implemented, the accuracy, likely user experience and what you would be losing instead, then I think I would prefer the old RF and an auxiliary EVF.

Superimposing any digital display over an optical one and retaining the accuracy and elegance that you have with the RF mechanism is a tall order ...... and the patent shown still has a mechanical component that relies on accurate calibration of lens and camera ...... the difference being that you will use software and not a screwdriver and allen key to correct any minor errors .......

Actually this would be quite attractive. Especially it you could set up calibration profiles for each lens e.g. the ZM Sonnar 50 and its front/back focussing habits.

The more you can fix the M's little wrinkles easily at home the better. Next stop, remapping dead pixels.

Except Leica has never offered a pixel remapping utility so why should anyone assume they would make a rangefinder calibration utility available to the consumer?  More likely it would simply remove any ability to calibrate the RF without sending the camera in for a lengthy period of sitting on the shelf.
