The M (Typ 240) started shipping in 2013 so if Leica sticks to a 3 year product cycle its successor should ship in 2016. And who says it won’t?

If Leica announces a new M in September I think they will have it ready to ship same time.  I believe their manufacturing has caught up with the announcements.  However, I'm not saying that the shelves will be littered with plenty of supply but those first on the lists will be able to have theirs.

I'd be amazed if Leica doesn't release an upgrade to the M(240) this September/October.  They have consistently released a new digital M every three years, without fail.  There is a lot they can do for the existing model, and besides the whole M camera line needs a bit of rationalisation.

The new system camera is something else entirely ...

Could it be the new M is a stripped version of the 240, maybe without video, something like the ME compared to the original M? Bringing down the cost, making it more affordable and later  launch the real new M?

The video does not increase the cost in any way.

A different thing is a camera like the M60. It is a question of style, not cost.

I'd be surprised if video does not increase cost in any way.  That makes no sense.  You need R&D to put the codecs and other video related firmware paraphernalia in there, not to mention the video button.  Yes, the button costs money.

If Leica was in the business of producing ultra-high-turnover low price objects then the cost of a button may influence the retail price. But it isn't, so it doesn't.

In fact Leica is as close to the opposite of that way of doing business as you can get, certainly in the photographic world, and their pricing is a direct reflection of the value to the customer, a financial reflection of desire, and the cost of production is only one of the factors that determines price, and by no means the most important one.

In other words, cutting out video in Leica world will not make for a cheaper M.

Well I hope that's correct as I'd like some GAS relief this year, or at least from a new M body (or type 246 if I don't like it).

Though an interchangeable lens Q or equivalent may well interest me.

It's funny but I had exactly the same experience. Just came back from one week in the Czech Republic and I was shocked at the number of Canon and Nikon DSLRs in the hands of tourists. Very few mirrorless and mostly with Asian tourists, but the vast majority was DSLRS which makes me wonder about the imminent death of this technology at the hands of mirrorless. One guy even brought a 1Dx with a 50/1.4 to a classical concert but didn't try to take any photos. I only saw an M3 with one Chinese tourist but never anyone with a digital M, apart from me.

I just been in Barcelona, Bangkok, Cambodia, Bali over the last 4 weeks.

Agree that lots of Canikon DSLRs in Barcelona (i.e. Europe), some Fuji, but the striking thing about the Chinese and Japanese who comprise the majority of the tourists in SE Asia is that probably 95% use phones. Otherwise, mostly cheaper Canikon DSLR with package midrange zoom lenses.

The only other Leica seen was an M9/28mm Summilux on a classy looking gent in the Mercer Hotel in Barcelona (a classy joint).

Had a long transit in Bangkok on the way back. The camera store in the airport had very few Canon/Nikon DSLR. Mainly compacts from a wide range of manufacturers, otherwise Sony A7 and Olympus OM-D were featured premium products.

I could really do with some GAS relief too, having acquired both a M246 and a Noctilux earlier this year.

A lot depends on what they have available for engineering resources. Leica just got done introducing a new product called the Q. Any new product sucks a lot more resources than a simple product update.

I wouldn't know for sure, but it is possible the the Q might have displaced the M as far as engineering time goes, pushing back a new revision. Also, consider that if the next M revision would be as radical as some are predicting it will require even more effort to produce.

I don't think the 3-year rule is cast in stone and even if it was there is no reason that it might be broken once in a while.

I was looking for some sales figures and came across this blog.

https://photographylife.com/how-mirrorless-cameras-could-save-the-photo-industry

I moved to Leica because they are simple - the camera does not get in the way of taking a good picture. I ended up using Canon on the "P" setting most of the time, taking pictures probably worse than I did 20 years earlier with 35mm, and lots out of focus.

I find with my MM I use most of the functionality most of the time - for any piece of technology that is surely an indication of good design.

This is like Schrödinger's Leica!

Is a new M dead or alive?

Both. Until the speculation ends and we open the box and either find the new M alive and well or that the box is empty. :D

I'm hoping for a new M along the lines of the rumour that it will be a slimmed down version with some form of optical/electronic rangefinder. If that pans out then I'll be tempted to dip my toes into the world of Leica digital.

Short answer: No.

Slightly longer answer: The next M-E will be announced when the new M is. As the next M-E will probably be a variant of the M (Typ 240) with virtually all the features offered by the latter, introducing it any earlier wouldn’t make sense.
