Does the Q Portend the Death of the M?

Predictions.

1. No 50 or 75 Q. It will be a zoom or nothing. They won't make anything as provincial as a long normal or short portrait lens on a fixed camera.

2. There will be a Q with an M mount (or adaptable to one) that in addition to native AF lenses will use phase-detect focus assist to simulate RF focusing with M lenses, thereby bypassing the RF linkage (which gets knocked out) and the RF/VF (which is $$$).

Dante

I hope that Leica will introduce a short zoom version of the Q. A 35-75mm internal focus lens will be better than a long and heavy monstrosity.

My wife, who is the Q user, wants a Noctilux 40mm version.

I held the Q for exactly 30 seconds in my hands before I decided that this camera is not for me: the viewfinder is simply crap- so much worse than the optical one in the M240, the feeling of manual precision focusing is gone, and so is the impression of personally creating a handicrafted photo. It is the difference between a mechanical watch and a quartz/electronic one-they both show time, but one of them does it in a manner that suits me more.

And I didn't say anything about the fact it's got a fixed lens

Why did you waste so much time? The fact that it has an electronic viewfinder and a fixed lens can be ascertained from the first ad in the internet that comes to hand.

Wise words, pop. As always your view sums it up neatly.

We were all interested to see what the Q would be.

For some a fixed 28mm lens with AF will be just what they need. For others, including me, no interest.

In summary, no death knells for the M.

Why would a Q-like body "kill" the M system in any way?... Those references to death are so boring... Nothing personal to the OP of course but how many times have we heard brainless things like that since the seventies (at least)?... M bodies and lenses will simply sell as long as there are rangefinder lovers.

Digilloyd? Seriously? He's one hair's breadth from an ass.

Which of the handicaps that he enumerates do you disagree with?  (I wear glasses.)

Leica was brown bread before they brought on the digital Ms (and left the R users stranded).  They need to keep up with the game to stay afloat, if I can mix my metaphors.

I struggle with the idea that the Q would kill off the M.  They are, to me, fundamentally different systems, and they should co-exist quite happily.

I wear glasses and have never struggled using an M, and the ability to interchange lenses is critical, especially with fixed focal length lenses.

No, he just makes basic mistake upon basic mistake and he admits that he is not very good at focusing rangefinders. His site was very good in the time that he specialized in small point and shoots . Maybe that is why you like him.

His triumphs were finding  an interesting type of moiré on the 246 (surprise!) and being the first blogger to repeat the flare issue on the Apo Summicron from this forum.

I think Leica needs many choices at different price levels, like other camera manufactures.

You walk in to a Leica store and wants something better than the iPhone camera. Buys a D-Lux and after a while upgrades to the X, then to the X Vario, the T, the Q, the M, the M Monochrom. Leica has now sold seven cameras and lenses ;)

The M system and the Q system are two very different stories. I would rather assume, the T and the X models will be

affected by the Q line - if there will arise Q models with a very good zoom lens (app. 24 - 70mm and f 2.8) or

interchangeable lenses. Anyway, I think that Leica is on the right track with the new line and it will be a commercial

sucess, if they do the right things in developping this line further on.
