Advertisement Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 Hi lct, Take a look here Leica Upgrade program for M9 ( corrosion of sensor). I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
hepcat Posted July 1, 2015 Share #462 Posted July 1, 2015 My M9P is currently in the queue in New Jersey for the sensor corrosion. On my initial call, I was offered the MP 240 replacement at $3750. I decided to have my M9P repaired. I figure that at $4k, if I wait a year or so, I can keep my M9P with the new sensor AND buy a used, like new M240 and have both. I talked to Leica NJ late last week. I have an April 21st service date for the M9P, but they don't have any sensors to install, and apparently the queue of cameras waiting repair is quite long. I have a wedding to shoot at the end of May, and they said that if the camera isn't finished by then, they'd make arrangements to send me a loaner. Can't ask for better customer service than that. It's just a shame that the CCDs have this problem. And my M9P was returned today (July 1, 2015) by UPS next day air with the new sensor and body covering. They did, in fact, send me a loaner M-E to do commercial work with in the interim. All is well (until the next time the sensor corrodes, I suppose.) IkarusJohn Posted July 1, 2015 Share #464 Posted July 1, 2015 And my M9P was returned today (July 1, 2015) by UPS next day air with the new sensor and body covering. They did, in fact, send me a loaner M-E to do commercial work with in the interim. All is well (until the next time the sensor corrodes, I suppose.) Thank you for posting this - I suspect this sort of service is more the norm than we read here. I have not held back from criticising Leica from time to time, but only because I do think sometimes they need to be told that they need to improve what they do in certain respects. I can forgive faults and defects if they are dealt with promptly and properly. Sometime, the initial reaction is good, then some one in middle management (probably after talking to the lawyers) tries to duck or fudge the issue, then it gets escalated to Stefan Daniel, or Dr Kaufmann, and we see the sort of response we expected from Leica in the first place. For myself, Stefan Daniel responded to my concerns over the M Edition 60 the day after I contacted him, I got a call (albeit in the middle of the night) from Customer Services, and they have now asked me to drop my camera off to the local distributor so it can be checked - unfortunately, this means a trip back to Wetzlar, but it pushes me to use my Monochrom and M-A, so it's no bad thing. I remain a loyal Leica customer, and supportive of them to the end (despite, every now and then needing to receive feedback on things they might need to improve - my best clients and friends do the same for me). Cheers John
kuau Posted July 2, 2015 Share #465 Posted July 2, 2015 I sent my M9 in 10 days ago to Leica in New Jersey for a CLAD, I thought my sensor was fine, but found out today that I have the corrosion problem to. The nice girl quoted me 8 week turn around time yet then said it will probably be longer. I was planning on selling my M9 and purchasing a used M240 for $4200 now I am not sure what to do. Of course they offered me the M240 upgrade for $3500 or the MP for $3750 I just recently got back into a Leica system. I purchased my M9 with a 28 Summicron ASPH latest model for $4000 I though it was a good deal. I also heard about the "new" sensor Leica is going to using in the M9. I don't know what to do now??? Well, it sounds like you either wait until your M9 is repaired, or trade it on the M240. OR you could buy an M240 at the $4500 level and then sell your M9 when you get it back from NJ in tip top shape and pay for a chunk of the M240 that way. As I said in my original post, I'll keep my M9P and for just a few hundred more than trading in the M9P, have both bodies.
lmitch6 Posted July 7, 2015 Share #467 Posted July 7, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Here's one mark on my M9P sensor (placed in the lower-left on the sensor), Leica is currently replacing it due to corrosion. Mine is on it's way in for evaluation for a spot nearly the same as yours. I heard back from Leica today, my sensor is corroded as well. I'm going to go with the upgrade to the M240 versus the sensor replacement. I'm a bit torn, as I'm quite fond of my M9, but for me I think the time is right for a change. kuau Posted July 11, 2015 Share #469 Posted July 11, 2015 ~ Just received my shipping confirmation. My M9 is finally coming home from NJ with a new sensor. Just a little over a month. Not too bad of a wait... Yay! Wow, you are lucky. Leica NJ is still quoting me up to 3 months.... and I did verify for sure that they are not using the new sensor, also if one wants the new yet to be released sensor they will only replace sensors with corrosion. rafikiphoto Posted July 22, 2015 Share #470 Posted July 22, 2015 UPS notified me today that my MM is on it's way back to me from Wetzlar following sensor replacement. That is exactly 4 weeks from me agreeing to the replacement so very good and spot on their original time estimate. I think I know the answer but I have emailed to enquire if the sensor is the original type or the new 'corrosion proof' type. I had declined an offer of a new M246. I would have had to pay 3750€ which I really couldn't justify. I have a soft spot for this MM, my first Leica!
rafikiphoto Posted July 23, 2015 Share #471 Posted July 23, 2015 Leica Customer Care replied to my email. They fitted the original type sensor.

I called on the 3 month mark and was told they would move it to the front of the line and have it to me within a week. I received it 5 days later. New leather and new sensor (original type). terrycym Posted September 17, 2015 Share #478 Posted September 17, 2015 I went to Leica Mayfair yesterday, the service shop with my ME. Within 5 minutes examination, I was told that delaminatiion, as they call it, had begun to occur. I was given the option of a repair or trade in. I took the trade in option to a nice new chrome M Type 240. i also got a £500 discount. I'm very happy. I went across the road to the shop with my receipt and was handed s brand new M. i got the handgrip too while i was there. Works so much better with the grip for me. Such nice people and good coffee too. As far as I can see only having it for one day, it's just like the ME but better. i can see the screen in daylight now. The thumb grip with the scroll wheel which I've been using for exposure compensation is nice too. oh! And the live view, so useful especially with my CV Mk III and when the camera is in awkward positions. I like it ang thanks Leica Mayfair!
