Popular Post Stefan Daniel Posted December 10, 2014 Popular Post Share #1 Posted December 10, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Dear Forum Members, We have been closely following debates on the CCD sensor issue in forums and blogs and take the opinions and criticism we read very seriously. For us, it is important that we offer only technically faultless products. We are therefore particularly sorry if the imaging quality of your camera should be adversely affected by corrosion effects on the IR filter cover glass. We would also like to express our sincerest regrets to all customers who may have encountered this problem. We have now identified the problem and are currently concentrating our efforts on finding a permanent technical solution. Our response to this problem is a full goodwill arrangement offering free replacement of affected CCD sensors. This goodwill arrangement applies regardless of the age of the camera and also covers sensors that have already been replaced in the past. Customers who have already been charged for the replacement of a sensor affected by this problem will receive a refund. The effect does not affect the CMOS sensor of the Leica M (Typ 240). Should you, as an M customer, be considering an upgrade from your camera to a Leica M or M-P (Typ 240), Customer Care would be pleased to make you an attractive offer following a check of your camera and under consideration of the model and its age. We have posted the details of the problem and the terms and conditions of our goodwill arrangement in the News section of our corporate Web site at Important Information Concerning the CCD Sensors // Global // About Leica News // Leica News // World of Leica - Leica Camera AG an have provided a link to the currently available Leica M Monochrom and M-E models. We will also be notifying our distributors regarding the new terms and conditions. We are aware that Leica’s reputation for superior quality and endurance was the driving factor for your decision for Leica. We profoundly regret that we have been unable to completely fulfil our promise to you and our own standards from the outset. We are now making every effort to find a permanent and satisfactory technical solution for this problem and hope that our goodwill arrangement is able to rebuild and maintain your trust in the Leica brand! Best regards, Stefan Daniel Director Product Management Photo

jmr237 Posted December 10, 2014 Share #2 Posted December 10, 2014 This is a reasonable and fair response, and I applaud Leica for taking this matter seriously.
Popular Post jaapv Posted December 10, 2014 Popular Post Share #3 Posted December 10, 2014 This is the response I have been waiting for and expecting, knowing Leica for four decades.
Popular Post jonoslack Posted December 10, 2014 Popular Post Share #4 Posted December 10, 2014 Me too Jaap excellent response, and it should really give people confidence the next trick is to organise the upgrades so that people only send their camera in when Leica are ready to replace the sensor (rather than waiting for ages)

Steve_F Posted December 10, 2014 Share #6 Posted December 10, 2014 Great response from Leica. Wonderful that the problem will be fixed for customers, as and when, (if) it arises. Steve.
asiafish Posted December 10, 2014 Share #7 Posted December 10, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) As someone who saved his money long and hard to buy an M Monochrom, it pleases me that Leica will stand behind it. I actually just called them yesterday to talk about sensor cleaning (Mine is pretty dirty) and even though I do not have the original sales receipt and never filled-out the warranty card (bought barely used in August 2013), the New Jersey rep assured me that I could just send it in with the unfiled warranty card and they would still clean the sensor, and that while checking it, if it had the delamination issue it would be replaced. I'm hoping it won't take three months (rep said three weeks), and more so hope they find a permanent fix other than upgrade to M240. There is magic in that CCD, though perhaps like all magic, its short-lived.
colint544 Posted December 10, 2014 Share #8 Posted December 10, 2014 Bravo, Leica. I've been worrying about the future of my beloved M Monochrom. I'm not a wealthy person, and I sacrificed a great deal to buy this camera. The idea of paying the price of a car for something which might have to be tossed away after only a few years seemed VERY un-Leica-like. I think Stefan Daniel hits the nail on the head - the quality and endurance of Leica products are the very reason we buy them in the first place. Many, many thanks for this response, Colin

wda Posted December 10, 2014 Share #11 Posted December 10, 2014 Just what Leica Loyalists have been eagerly awaiting. Well done Leica and 'thank you' Stefan.
AceVentura1986 Posted December 10, 2014 Share #12 Posted December 10, 2014 Excellent. Exactly what I would have expected. Bravo, Leica.
XVarior Posted December 10, 2014 Share #13 Posted December 10, 2014 After using the M9 for some good time now, I can hardly use any other M that does not has that fantastic CCD sensor inside! Knowing that Leica has found a solution to extend this CCD lifecycle makes me feel so happy and ready to look for a second M9 or an MM. Thanks Leica for this formidable support but in order to outshine, I think Leica got to start thinking making its own sensors, relying no more on others :-)
Daniel Novello Posted December 10, 2014 Share #14 Posted December 10, 2014 Well done! And what comfort and reassurance this statement is for all future Leica customers!
Edward Louis Marit Posted December 10, 2014 Share #15 Posted December 10, 2014 If they are developing a permanent replacement M9 / ME sensor not affected by delamination ( and in the meanwhile replacing existing sensors for free) which this message strongly implies, will they also be developing a replacement MM sensor with different cover glass to permanently fix the MM's? It's nice that they will replace like for like at no charge but as an MM owner I would like to have a permanent solution rather than sending my 8k camera in for a sensor replacement every 2 years, free or otherwise.
brusby Posted December 10, 2014 Share #16 Posted December 10, 2014 Yes, yes, yes! Thank you Leica. Although I no longer have my lovely M9P, I do have the M240 and I've managed to collect quite a few lenses over the years. It is very reassuring and confidence inspiring to see Leica do the right thing. It makes me not only want to hold onto my existing Leica gear, but to buy more. I'm certain the cost to Leica is not insignificant. I hope the returns in goodwill and new sales will make up for it many times over.

Now, if I can just get in line...

Knorp Posted December 10, 2014 Share #20 Posted December 10, 2014 Great initiative by Leica ! Too bad I had most of my beautiful Leica gear stolen from my home in August this year. So nothing to send in or to replace for me ... All the very best.
