Sean, this is the second time you have suggested this hotel is not good is it really that bad as most of the online reviews when we chose it were positive. I am aware it is in the RLD but the hotel looks ok. Do you have experience to suggest it is not?

No, not so much the hotel but the location bang smack in the RLD. Mind you though, Japan's RLD is mild and nothing compared to other countries (that I've lived & visited, at least). I'm about to finish work now so I can walk by & discretely take some pix off my iPhone (Sorry no Leica today ;)) to show the area around.

OK, the plan is only really to sleep in the hotel, we won't be hanging around in the area anyway. I've been in that area a number of times before, and as you say, it's mild compared to RLDs in other cities. The hotel had the right combination of price, availability, and location, at least for me.

... please let me know if you have any questions or comments.

Simon,

As with the One Challenge, you might like to add that zoom lenses are allowed but the focal length to be used must be declared with the details of the camera etc.

Pete.

Personally, I wouldn't be too concerned about this.

Firstly, I sampled quite a variety of accomodation-levels in Japan but can't remember any Hotel, Ryokan or Minshuko, which was not perfectly clean.

Secondly, I live in a part of our town, which has an official red-light district. In my impression, the respective business has a pretty good feeling, which people are simply passing through. No business wants to waste bandwidth.

Some things to try in Tokyo -

The barriers of the stations will open by inserting the ticket to the barrier . It will seemingly re-appear immediately two to three steps behind the barrier. It travels pretty fast through the machine, while it is also validated. Once, I made a small dot with a pencil to ensure that it is the same ticket. The alternative is a RFID Suica-card – Londoners will know the principle from their Oyster-cards.

I also found it impressive to see the number of people passing at rush hour through the large stations like Shinjuku, Shinagawa, or Tokyo.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government building at Shinjuku station is open to the public at the 45th floor, which allows a view over the city, skyscrapers stretching to the horizon in all directions. It is a good way of getting a feeling for the size of the city.

Sometimes, there are mobile earthquake simulators at the stations. Please remember to take off the shoes before entering, since technically they are living rooms.

Question out of left field for locals(Tokyo) and intending Challenge participants/travellers.

I am right on the cusp of buying a Sony A7S body. I will need a Leica M to Sony E mount (Metabones) adapter. I can't find one definitely before I leave for Japan (Sun 7) so is it reasonable to expect to be able to easily buy one in Tokyo without spending all my time chasing after it?

If not, I will defer buying the camera till I get back, but would like to 'play' with it for the Night Challenge (wearing a Noctilux, of course)!

Hi John

I recently purchased a Sony A7 together with the Metabones adapter. I took the Metabones adapter back 2 hours later, spent a bit more, and bought the Novoflex adapter instead. The difference in fit is like chalk and cheese, there seems to be a lot of sample variation in the Metabones products.

Of course, that doesn't answer your original question :) but there are plenty of camera shops in Tokyo, both Leica and Sony are popular, and I'm pretty sure you would be able to find yourself one or other adapter there, or a local equivalent. I could check for you in the second half of next week, once I arrive in Tokyo.

In fact, I should have googled before I spoke...... map Camera, one of the larger retailers, do sell the Metabones one. They also advertise Novoflex, although I couldn't specifically find the appropriate Leica adapter.

If they have it, so will a bunch of other shops

Thanks Simon, for the info and references. This trip is becoming dangerous (financially!!!).

I always never go shoping, but I just might this time. After a good sleep, I may venture into the city (Melbourne) and buy the A7S body and count on getting an adapter in Shinjuku. As I rationalize my position, I really need two adapters. One for M lenses and one for R lenses. This is my way of avoiding buying an M240 or whatever.

Trouble is, I know my photography will be exactly the same, just more fun with more gear. :)

Tragic.

The other place is Fujiya Camera in Nakano (I generally prefer to shop in Fujiya as it's a little cheaper). However when I looked at the Novaflex, my jaw dropped at the prices (imports are naturally more expensive in Japan...every layer gets their cut).

Oh before I forget here are the pix around E-Hotel & Granbell. Granbell's surrounding isn't as bad as I portrayed it to be. Apologies.

The challenge details and rules are now available to download at http://leica.photos/AOC.pdf - please let me know if you have any questions or comments.

We will determine the starting location once we have arrived in Kyoto.

DigitalHeMan,

According to the agenda 'Leica One Challenge Asia 2015,' main stage is KYOTO, not TOKYO.

Basically, I'm sorry to say I couldn't go and stay in Kyoto, because of my firmed schedule from 21st (Thursday) to 23rd (Saturday) May.

As I live in Yachiyo-City far from Leica Store Ginza half an hour by train, I could join the Tokyo event in some-where and some-time, if possible.

Best regards from Yachiyo-City

Hello Takanori-San,

We will finish the week off with the challenge in Kyoto, but we will definitely be in Tokyo during the first part of the week and look forwards to meeting you at some point then!

Naive question: is it possible to do the same with a Fuji digital, use adapters, I mean?

Im sure it is, but don't definitely know. Try googling Leica M to Fiji adapters to se what happens.

A quick google gave me this.
