MirekE Posted September 20, 2013 Share #1 Posted September 20, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) My camera yesterday reset to factory defaults. This is pretty annoying, because the camera started shooting jpeg instead of DNG without any warning. Also the personal information needs to be punched in again, which is not my favorite way of spending my free time. The battery was full and was not removed that day. Last actions before this happened: I was fiddling with WB, removed and reinserted the card, formatted the card and shot several pictures. Is this a known issue? I don't want to part with my camera for many weeks to find that this could have been addressed by firmware update. Thanks!

jaapv Posted September 20, 2013 Share #2 Posted September 20, 2013 This has been happening ever since Leica introduced the Stupid mode on their digital Ms... It is a major annoyance to users and the best thing for Leica to do is imo to make the default mode user-programmable like all other user settings. What is the "Stupid" mode and can I prevent it from happening again?
01af Posted September 20, 2013 Share #4 Posted September 20, 2013 Yes—I also spend a considerable amount of attention to not let the camera (both M9 and M) slip into Stupid mode ... which they tend to do immediately when the owner is looking somewhere else
lct Posted September 21, 2013 Share #5 Posted September 21, 2013 Never heard of S mode on the M240. Could you explain what this stupid mode is on the latter?
jaapv Posted September 21, 2013 Share #6 Posted September 21, 2013 They call it the default user setting now. It contains the setup of the camera that Leica fondly -and erroneously- believes to be the preferred way the averaged owner would use it. In reality dumbs the camera down to soccer-mom level. As it has a habit of falling into this default mode at inconvenient moments it is a source of constant irritation.
lct Posted September 21, 2013 Share #7 Posted September 21, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Never suffered from this new "stupidity" so far. Only when i reset the camera, which is perfectly normal.
jaapv Posted September 21, 2013 Share #8 Posted September 21, 2013 Mine has reverted twice now.
MarkP Posted September 21, 2013 Share #9 Posted September 21, 2013 Yes, it only happens occasionally and really pisses me off. Why does Leica not let us determine our own Stupid Mode? Do they think we're too stupid?
Stef63 Posted September 21, 2013 Share #10 Posted September 21, 2013 Do they think we're too stupid? I think they hope so... Happened several times to me too. Really annoying
kdriceman Posted September 21, 2013 Share #11 Posted September 21, 2013 Yes, it only happens occasionally and really pisses me off. Why does Leica not let us determine our own Stupid Mode? Do they think we're too stupid? After all... We did (me included) pay $7,000 for a manual focus digital camera body.
MediaFotografie Posted September 21, 2013 Share #12 Posted September 21, 2013 Page 203 of the user manual has two important things: First, how to save settings on a cf-card and restore them - maybe useful here. Second: "Resetting all customer settings" - should only work via "reset" in the main menu - obviously wrong?
jaapv Posted September 21, 2013 Share #13 Posted September 21, 2013 You don't lose your settings -it is not a reset- the camera just goes to the immutable default user mode, choose one of your own presets in the menu again and your settings are unaltered. I think you mean an SD card.
ericborgstrom Posted September 21, 2013 Share #14 Posted September 21, 2013 Diglloyd, who known more about camera testing in practise than some here care to admit, has this reset as one of the problems he finds with the Leica M. We are many who hopes wonders from the awaitwd firmware upgrade. And his annoyance with the Summicrom 50 ASP flare now seems to have been acknowleged by Leica. They will fix your flairing lens. viramati Posted September 21, 2013 Share #15 Posted September 21, 2013 This happened to me the other day but I have to say I'm not sure if I didn't press the reset box by mistake as it is right next to the format box on the display. Personally I think it should be moved to a safer position in the menu
jaapv Posted September 21, 2013 Share #16 Posted September 21, 2013 If you pressed reset you should have lost all your user settings.
viramati Posted September 21, 2013 Share #17 Posted September 21, 2013 Yes I did. maybe I have misunderstood other posters problem. Mine reset to the factory default and I lost all my profiles, luckily I had them backed up

MirekE Posted September 22, 2013 Author Share #20 Posted September 22, 2013 But you didn't loose your user profiles did you. I have been using only the default settings so far. I am not sure if other profiles would be lost or not, but the reset wiped off even the copyright info. Honestly, I still do not understand what other people are saying. Is the reset to factory defaults a known problem or not? Would it help if I saved my settings under custom (as opposed to default) profile? Thanks.
