Mini M? [MERGED] AKA X-Vario

After reading this entire thread and considering all the points of view, here is my two cents. My photoshop fake below takes that other photoshop fake one step further by proposing the idea of an X-EVIL.

Such a camera would not cannibalize the existing M market but rather fill the large hole in their product line by entering the very popular and growing mirrorless interchangeable APS market represented by Sony NEX and Fuji X. The current X2 body is very close in size to the NEX 7. It was pointed out earlier in this thread ( http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m9-forum/285598-mini-m-52.html#post2416030 ) that CMOSiS may already have a "Mini" sensor, which if it is APS-C (or H) could conceivably retain a 24MP resolution to compete with the NEX 7. Plus it has been rumored that Leica has been working on an EVIL camera for quite some time, even dropping hints that it would be "at least APS-C size" If not FF, could the X be a possible platform?

By adding a new interchangeable AF lens line, as many have suggested, Leica can appeal to a much larger customer base that will never consider manual focus lenses or RF cameras. Although my suggested price is much higher than competing APS models, many will choose Leica for superior optics and build quality. For $1,500 more than the X2, you get a higher resolution sensor and built-in EVF. A new X series of compact AF lenses would be optimized for digital sensors (like the new Zeiss Touit AF line for APS) and be similar in quality and price to existing Summarit-M lenses, without cannibalizing the premium M line. This camera system could grow Leica's marketshare and help them to achieve their 1% goal.

The M family (M, MM, and M-E) remains FF with top-of-the-line lenses and RF. An X-EVIL would offer existing M owners an affordable second body to mount their M lenses on. If Leica made an adaptor similar to the Speedbooster, M and R lenses could retain their focal length and gain a stop, alleviating the crop factor. The X-EVIL also provides an alternative to M for those who want a lightweight compact body able to take any Leica lens, including AF.

Not really expecting such a camera next week, but I hope Leica has something similar in their pipeline.

Fine excercise for a camera I would seriously consider to buy... in case Leica will make it like you write and at that price :o (and so better if APS-H)

Maybe it's wishful thinking, but I too don't think Leica would be this oblivious or audacious enough to create a viral marketing campaign around THIS camera.

Well said... making such a campaigning, around a zoomed X, and finally having the famed LeicaRumor to guess exactly... :o would be a flop of image in any sense...

While I'm inclined to agree, did they really create a viral campaign? Or did the forum whip up a storm in a teacup?

One thing is for certain, one of Leica's best assets is it's customers.

I completely disagree with the idea that Leica is purposely deceiving people with fake leaks, etc....no company would want to leak subpar products to lower expectations.....especially Leica, who aren't exactly the sharpest knives when it comes to advertising.

in reality I think they tried to create some buzz and instead got undermined by some fake photoshops and now find themselves in an awkward position of "err...that's not the camera....what do we do til June 11th?"

I do, however feel that Leica deserve this for calling the camera 'mini M', which is really going to be a misnomer at the end of the day.

Actually, if you overlay the latest Singapore image with the French leaked one, they are identical images, and I mean identical.

So, either some hoaxer has done both images. Or the French one is the real deal all along.

edit: And as I'm open in thinking the "tease" is dumb. I really hope for their sake the French one was a fake. Imagine having said "You've heard the rumours, now get the truth!" in ANOTHER teaser if the rumour was, in fact, wholly accurate! To me, that's just pathetic.

Hi, Personally, I find this whole 'peek-a-boo' Ad campaign and all the circus surrounding it irritating and not something I would expect from Leica, as it appears to be just attention gathering - perhaps to take our minds off other companies products ? which of course they are entitled to do, but it's still irritating.

IMO if it had been done as a series of these disclosures, but daily in the last 4 or so days before the event, then I could understand that, but what has been done is just silly PR.

I'm in the market for a digital CL type camera that hopefully could take R lenses via an adaptor, and I'm confident that if Leica did introduce such a camera it would sell very well, and even if it took M sales away, - so what, they'd still be selling Leicas and presumably more lenses !

My rant over !

Bruno

Leica rumors has reported that the new camera will indeed be just an X with a fixed

SLOW zoom stuck on it for 2500 Euros!

Leica should be ashamed of themselves for

releasing this turd.

You have to wonder how they could be so completely out of touch.

according to leica rumors this morning, it looks like a 28/70 equivalent zoom, aps sensor, 16.2mp, why this is the mini M as opposed to the micro M (x2). This is just an X2 with a zoom, ho-hum, for around $3000.
