You won't accept as EVIL any camera whose EVF is not built in ... which excludes the Olympus Pen and the Fuji NEX-5. Both viewpoints are too restrictive: all these are archetypical EVIL cameras... colmac Posted May 29, 2013 Share #803 Posted May 29, 2013 Rumours on the net suggest Pana‘s overdue Lumix GX2 may donate genes for the new Leica Digilux M albeit with monochrome rather than 12MP Truesense colour sensor. That would represent a quantum leap for Leica and me ….. must go down to the cellar and count my IIfords.
jaapv Posted May 29, 2013 Share #804 Posted May 29, 2013 I would be gobsmacked if whatever camera is coming would sport a Truesense CCD. Sony maybe, or a special development CMOS ( not likely at this price point). And whether Leica would reverse their policy and use Panasonic elements for a camera they developed themselves appears to be rather unlikely too. And monochrome? Leica must be hugely relieved that they made a success of one model. Tempting fate with a second one for a larger public might be regarded as foolhardy. But it is a weird world - anything might happen...
jjb Posted May 29, 2013 Share #805 Posted May 29, 2013 Got to admit I'm disappointed over two trade-offs that Leica appear to have made in their latest X camera: 1) lens speed/range (slow, short zoom) and 2) optional EVF (I assume there will be an optional EVF as with X2). No way would I have made these same trade-offs for the X-Vario, Type 107 - or whatever they decide to call it. But, in fairness to Leica, they must believe that this makes good business sense based on their goals for the X family and their knowledge of the global luxury market. I think US$3,000 + another $300-$500 for a VF is heady territory for this spec level, but maybe customers are already lining up in the BRICs (esp China) to leap at the X-Vario. Now, all that's left is the Leica cocktail party, er, "product launch," on the 11th!
Dr Owl Posted May 29, 2013 Share #806 Posted May 29, 2013 Is the M240 an EVIL to you? I hesitate to ascribe moral qualities to an inanimate object ... just as I don't blame the pieces of silver for what happened in Jerusalem. But I do regard the M240 as being the first, and so far only, full-frame mirrorless system camera. And, as a recent immigrant from the Kingdom of Nikonia, seeking a lightweight high-build-quality digital system, this was an attraction. Presumably, Leica hopes that there are more like me out there. Having looked closely at the Sony RX1, I think that if it tried Sony could make a high-build-quality full-frame mirrorless system ... and that of course Zeiss could design excellent lenses for it. But, having looked at the price of the Sony RX1, I doubt whether they would charge less for it than Leica does. Later, Dr Owl
leohong Posted May 29, 2013 Share #807 Posted May 29, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) I sold my m8 and m9 on the date Leica first deliver its M. I have been using the Nex and all kinds of adapters until today I get an email from my dealer in New York that My M will be here in 48 hours. During these two months, I have been thinking if Leica would produce a camera like this: APS-C sensor and Leica M mount but with a combination of SpeedBooster and Hawk's Close focus mechanism. Only EVF and LCD in the back. Live-view only. With the SpeedBooster, the camera will be slimmer because it should take off a few mm form the flange distance. With Hawk's close focus build-in. This will make a hell of a Mini-M IHMO. It is a full frame M with a twist. It is slimmer than the M. All M lens will gain one stop and Leica could easily correct whatever they want in software. For a couple of ultra wides that can't fit, Leica can design a couple new one for that specifically. It also takes care of the dust on sensor as the sensor is protected by the booster. And people will not be complaining about the close focus distance of the M lens as it is reduced significantly. I would buy it to back up my M. It is a no brainer. As a backup or a starter, it will certainly gain grounds against Sony, Fuji, Canon, Nikon, etc. So many of us carry two cameras at a time that this will be a great second camera with a different focal length. If only Leica will make such a camera.....which turns Elmars to Elmarits, Elmarits to Summicrons and Summicrons to Summilux and with close focus. Imagine your 50 Summilux acts like a Noctilux. This just makes way too much sense for Leica to do. So they probably won't. It is a way for them to make a new AF APS system and still have reasonable M lens compatibility. It doesn't look like there is enough room inside the Nex mount for a recessed Speedbooster to work - allowing for M lenses to be used on it. But you never know what designers can come up with. I am not sure what the minimum thickness requirements would be for some kind of Speedbooster/M lens to work on a body designed with that as an objective. Paolo.Battista Posted May 29, 2013 Share #814 Posted May 29, 2013 Good, so if that is what people ask for then they should also show the equivalent relative aperture (f5.47- f10.16 for that particular lens) for your DOF calculations. I'm more interested in having an immediate equivalence to the field of view (in the format I'm used to) that to DoF (which I perfectly know to be greater than with my other cameras). This works well for me, I don't want to say that it's the best system for everyone.

IkarusJohn Posted May 29, 2013 Share #819 Posted May 29, 2013 A question - if the French photo is a genuine Leica release, and not a photoshopped fake produced for entertainment and to watch us all throw our toys out of the cot, why is it such a crappy picture? Leica doesn't normally do such low res, sepia fundamentally awful pictures for its releases, does it?
