- I do not use the internal B/W WB. Indeed, the output file from the camera will be in 256 shades of grey, where, if the photo is taken in color, the file contains 256x256x256 color possibilities that can be tweaked to your liking with your B/W processing software.

You're probably right Michel, but the thing is that I like the result from the JPG BW mode in the Digilux 2. In my opinion that's exactly what makes the distinctive D2 look we talk about here. You could add a little pp i Photoshop, but don't do too much. If I make a BW version of a colour photo from the D2, I don't end up with that smooth Leica feeling. Best Geir

May I add a comment? I do not see this as an 'either BW or Colour' question. Shoot Raw; set WB to BW, you see the potential picture in monochrome (which you like) but have the advantage of producing a colour version later if you so desire. Don't worry about disk space; you can always delete the Raw (Tiff) file if you wish and just keep the mono version.

I try to edit ruthlessly anyway in an attempt to keep just what is worth keeping. But I don't necessarily do that at the outset, but revisit the folders some time later when emotions have settled.

@ wda,

thanks for your raw BW tip. I'll try it next time. ;)

And concerning your comment on editing, I wholeheartedly agree. How many times did I ask myself when looking at some older photos: Why the heck did I edit like that? Much better to wait!

@ Geir,

Fair enough. Technicalities are details. What ultimately matters is to obtain an image you like ;)

Paul's autumn leaves photo is OUTSTANDING.

Have just got a Sigma DP2s. You can take lovely pictures with it when conditions are right, and the sensor is a lot bigger than the D2's... but the Digilux holds its own, that is for sure.

Here are two D2 shots from the garden.

Best wishes to all

IANC

  • 2 weeks later...

Every time I come here and read and have a look at the wonderful photos, I have to say I love this thread. On my last travel to Korea this year in October I had my V-Lux1, my D-Lux 5 and my Digilux 2 with me. Frankly say I mostly used my D-Lux 5 due to it´s compact size and comfortable handling in full auto mode, but when I took out my Digilux 2 especially in the beginning evening it was so nice to catch the atmosphere in the areas of "Insadong" where many art shops are and then later at "Bukcheon" (northern area village - old town), where one can find very small cafes, galleries, mini-shops with hand made things.

Some impressions, all with Diliglux 2

Thomas, a lovely set of pictures. I had to smile when I noticed giraffes on the roof. :)

Generally speaking quite a challenging sequence for the Digilux2. You have handled exposure very well. Thank you for the insight.

Thanks for your responds. Let me show some more pictures here

These photos I made in a very small restaurant in northern Seoul called "Art For Life", the light was very decent and the place was lovely.

The last picture was again in early evening in Seoul Bukcheon area. I like very much how the Digilux handles with mixed light conditions (here some light from outside - streets lamp, and the warm light inside). The atmosphere when I took the photo was really same as one can see here - for that, I love my D2 :)

I did not use tripod, because it is not so flexible. Also all photos here are shown without any post processing, just all JPG as they come out from the camera (only size and some compression for posting here).

Regards

Thomas

Enjoying everyone's contributions to this remarkable mega-thread! :D

A few miscellaneous B&W's from the last year, tweaked in NIK Silver EFEX.
