Londonmember Posted January 14, 2014 Share #101 Posted January 14, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Like the black dot a LOT. One thing that had been putting me off the M240 was the huge red dot. Soooo obtrusive and flashy. I dont like black tape on my cameras either, so ill get a black dot

randyman Posted January 14, 2014 Share #104 Posted January 14, 2014 While this might seem to be veering from the subject at hand, please hear me out. For all those wrestling with this highly divisive dot dilemma, I'd like to recommend William Gibson's excellent novel "Pattern Recognition." Its protagonist, Cayce Pollard, has an "unusual intuitive sensitivity for branding," in that she's actually physically allergic to most logos and corporate IDs. Interesting concept. Though she does have an appreciation for good design, as evidenced by her adoption of a Buzz Rickson MA-1 bomber jacket for a daily uniform, I'm guessing the red dot would drive her bonkers. Even the black dot would probably give her hives; I think she'd likely be in the "no dot" camp. Joking aside, it really is a fascinating read. And may I also recommend my current personal solution: Scotch® Colored Plastic Tape 190BK. It's stretchy, water resistant, and leaves no adhesive goop around the edges. It's great stuff, especially if you currently feel like stopping short of a permanent modification to your camera. Welcome, dear visitor! Jeff S Posted January 14, 2014 Share #105 Posted January 14, 2014 ...especially if you currently feel like stopping short of a permanent modification to your camera. I saved the original red dot…would only take a minute to replace it if that ever became necessary. Nothing permanent involved. BTW, that big red dot on the Scotch tape is hideous. farnz Posted January 15, 2014 Share #106 Posted January 15, 2014 ... And may I also recommend my current personal solution: Scotch® Colored Plastic Tape 190BK. .... Won't that look a little odd on a silver M? Pete.

MRJohn Posted February 19, 2014 Share #108 Posted February 19, 2014 I just bought 240 pieces of 12 mm black dots from Herma for less than 2 EUR for the whole pack. (https://www.herma-fachshop.de/Herma-1869-Vielzwecketiketten-schwarz-12-mm-240-Etiketten-ar664.aspx). Perfect fit. Sorry if this tip has an impact on some business models trying to sell black dots for 30 USD each. Hopefully this is helpful to some who look for a discrete solution without paying ripoff prices. But hold on a second, if I now sell the remaining ones (239 x 30 USD) I can almost buy myself another M.
farnz Posted February 19, 2014 Share #109 Posted February 19, 2014 I just bought 240 pieces of 12 mm black dots from Herma for less than 2 EUR for the whole pack. ... … and the only thing that seems to be missing is "Leica" in white script. lenicolas Posted February 19, 2014 Share #110 Posted February 19, 2014 But isn't that paper? If it's those cheap paper dots (which the price suggests) they aren't very durable, the color will peel off the dot after a few rubs, not to mention rain or a splash of water... I would love to have a blank black dot, without the Leica script. Funny that the brands that make and sell soft releases/shutter buttons haven't thought of making custom dots... Imagine that as the dot on a silver M

lenicolas Posted February 20, 2014 Share #113 Posted February 20, 2014 Keeps me up at night. Seriously speaking, it's safe to assume that every dedicated photographer loves two things : - beauty, that's why he is into visual arts. - originality, many of us try to achieve a personal style, take photos that haven't been done before. Isn't every click of the shutter a step in a quest to make something that's beautiful and personal/unique? I'm actually more surprised that some people can own a camera without altering it Ps : I'm sending a mail to artisan obscura asking if they can make me a 12mm dot... StephenPatterson Posted February 20, 2014 Share #115 Posted February 20, 2014 People actually worry about this? Worry? No. Consider? Yes. I also consider my garden, the quality of the leather for my shoes, the art I place on my walls, the wine I choose at dinner. Is a black Leica dot important? Perhaps not, but I enjoy it. Londonmember Posted February 20, 2014 Share #118 Posted February 20, 2014 Worry? No. Consider? Yes. I also consider my garden, the quality of the leather for my shoes, the art I place on my walls, the wine I choose at dinner. Is a black Leica dot important? Perhaps not, but I enjoy it. Yes, me too. I have a Fotopia black Leica dot from HK. I didn't like the great big flashy red dot on the M, but I don't like smothering my new camera in black tape either. Its a beautiful as well as functional object. In guitars, people pay 1000s extra for 'a custom worn look' to the body and neck. I don't see the point of that but at least Leica don't make a 'Cartier-Bresson' special edition with brassing...
