any plans to move to an M9/ME/M?

I'm curious about how many M8 owners are planning a shift to a newer model now that the lineup has been shaken up a bit? I havent owned my M8 for very long (a bit over a month) an am perfectly happy shooting 35mm nonstop with my upgraded M8. I am still totally in love with the M8.

I am completely in love with the M Monochrome, however it is just too expensive for me at this time. M8 prices seem to be very stable right now ($2000 to $2500) however M9 prices have been consistently falling. I am not planning to upgrade, mainly because I love the B&W capabilities of the M8 as compared to the M9....and that I'd rather spend my money on better lenses than a different body.

that being said, I can definitely see why others would be wanting to change. anyone already ordered one of the newer cameras or are planning to?

Yes, I just did.

It has been a discounted M9-P to click with me.

To me this is the pinnacle of CCD based Ms and consumer cameras.

I think M8 was a great tool and I used it for work (measuring luminance and shooting architectural with the CV 12mm, for our office, taken 70+ thousands exposures, all white writing gone and the spinning wheel stuck and not working anymore, but still clicking). With excellent results.

I have to add that I also have used for my own images, but not with great results, as I am not that good; Camera was not the issue :-)

Long life to both M8 and M9!

I have an M8, which I have owned for a little over a year. To be honest I haven't really completely bonded with the camera. I did think about selling it a while back, but haven't gone through with it. I think I need to give myself a chance to use the camera a bit longer. I am finding the more I shoot with the M8, the more I enjoy it.

I don't think I would be any happier with an M9 or successor and the M8 isn't limiting me. Frame lines matching my Leica MP would be the biggest draw of an M9. The M8 does produce pleasing files. Paradoxically I would only consider changing to an M9 is if I started really to 'get' the M8.

The fact that new models came out didn't make my M8 work any worse and I'm pretty sure that no M9 or MM would make me a better photographer. So far the only reason that might make me switching would be shooting again in FF meaning that a 50 is a 50 and not a 66.5. Apart from that I still see no further advantages as the M8 was already an excellent starting point.

Besides, whilst used lenses prices are increasing, prices of used M8s this side of the ocean are slowly but constantly falling. I paid mine 2.5 k€ in 2009, today they hardly exceed 1.6 k€ and I already see some selling around 1.1k€ so selling mine would be quite a bath of blood.

Cheers,

Bruno

I still prefer the IQ, the shutter/motor noise and the top LCD of the M8.2 so no "upgrade" to the M9, let alone the ME, for me. The M240 looks interesting indeed but the lack of frame lever, discreet mode and top LCD is a problem as well as the (congenital?) inability to feed the EVF at more than 30 fps. Will the new "M" solve the color shift issues of the M9 and perform better than a 5D with R lenses? If so, i could order one with some gaffer tape to hyde the bling red dot, but i'm not in a hurry.

The M240 looks interesting indeed but the lack of... discreet mode and top LCD...

From the M sound in the Thorsten/Daniel video, discreet mode may not be necessary, as the obnoxiously long shutter re-cock noise of the M8/M9 seems to have been eliminated and replaced with something closer to a 'one click' sound.

And the top LCD may be far less an issue in the M, given its vastly improved battery life. Unless one uses live view or video, one will seemingly be able to shoot all day without worry.

For me, weather sealing alone is worth the price of admission to the M...if IQ is there. And 2m frame lines are a bonus.

My Leica cameras use film. I have a Canon DSLR for digital.

I might still consider buying an M8 (the new M's are too expensive for me). Given the LCD issue, and the price reductions on the M9, the price of s/h M8's should fall further. If they drop to what I would consider a sensible level, then I may take the plunge (from a dealer with a decent warranty only).

My M9 should arrive in the next day or two. I purchased my M8.2 as a Leica demo with factory warranty after the M9 was announced and now am getting a demo M9 with warranty. I have not decided if the M9 will replace the M8.2 or be in addition to. I like what Leica has done with the new M, but I will let it "mature" a bit before making a decision.

After checking out and handling the M Type 240 and the M-E two weeks ago, I think if I do upgrade in the near future, the M will be my next model. It would be 'nice' to have a CMOS, a CCD and film Leica and retire my DSLR. By the time I've amassed enough funds, hopefully any Version 1.0 bugs would've been ironed out.

interesting perspectives, everyone!

since writing this post, i have to admit i am really getting tempted by the M-E. I love the anthracite finish, and i love the slight stripping down of features (well only a couple things, really)... there's no way i can put $5450 into it right now though. I am hoping that the M-E doesn't do well in the market, and that prices fall 2nd hand....so i can buy one! a sinister wish, i know....but i need an anthracite M-E in my life at some point!! I don't see MM prices falling much any time soon.

The camera I would like after the M8 will ave to be the Monochrome and I don't think I will be able to afford that any time.

Even in the use market in a couple of year ,I can imagine them retaining most of there value. They need to make more of them lol

Appears it only took a bit over a month for GAS to set in after your last M purchase. Given your reasoning, I suggest you hold off a bit until the various other likely M-E finishes and options appear. At this rate I think you're in for a long, bumpy and expensive ride.

Better to get excitement from the pics IMO, which can be plentiful with any of the options. And a lot cheaper, too. But, whatever makes you happy is all that counts.

BTW, you can always remove the preview lever from your M8u if that will get you excited.

On paper at least the M looks perfect for what I do, mainly tripod shots of inanimate objects at 300 dpi.

New M tethered could make me very happy.

But I'd be waiting to make sure that the image style and quality is at least equal to my M8 and contains what I think of as real Leica magic. One of the things that M8 has done for me is to really slow up my old "up grading" habit because every time a new contender comes along that looks like a few more mps and added ease of use, I kind of get the feeling that image wise they are never seriously better than the M8. And if I need a really big file I can always stitch. I see M9 as more resolution but not necessarily better IQ than 8

lol! seriously....i was told it is a slippery slope...didn't realise it was icey!

i'm just speaking out loud i think....i'd rather invest money in better lenses at the moment as i reallly am enthralled with my M8! but it's nice to see nice things for the future! :)
