Hello, Is anyone out there? Any reflex users??

I may be mistaken, but I have the impression the Forum concentrates on Leica Rangefinders (no matter how justifiable that may be - beautiful cameras - I have a couple). However, I've previously owned a Leicaflex SL:) and am just about to pick up a mint Leica R-E plus extra bits. Could other reflex owners give me their experiences with the R-E and it's various lenses/accessories? (Experiences both good and bad:eek:)

There are many R users here, me included. It's a shame that Andreas didn't create a separate R forum, but I guess this is our 'home' now.

The Leica R-E was a lower cost alternative to the R4/R5 as it doesn't have the multi exposure modes such a program or shutter priority. I guess there will be some other minor differences. It's really a newer version of my camera the R3.

What lenses do you have or are getting? You need a 3 cam or R cam lens to work on your R-E - lenses for the earlier Leicaflex/SL models are 1 or 2 cam but they can be modified to 3 cam.

I was wondering whether R questions belong in this section or in the Historica section :(

Compared with the Leicaflex SL the R-E has numerous additional features, the most important for my over-40 eyes is the built-in viewfinder diopter adjustment. The R-E is't as robust as the Leicaflexes but with normal use and not too much abuse should be quite reliable.

The R-E I used was given to me in damaged condition after the previous owner broke the tripod mount. On the R4 through at least R6.x bodies and possibly R7 as well, the tripod socket is attached directly to the camera's main casting with three tiny screws. The tripod socket material apparently is stronger than the main casting because when the tripod mount is over-stressed the main casting breaks, not the tripod socket. This damage is uneconomical to repair. Contrast this with the tripod socket construction of the Leicaflexes: the tripod socket is attached to a sub-frame which acts as the weak link when over-stressed. The sub-frame is much more economical to replace than a main casting.

Greetings James, it is from 1991 production and comes with a Vario-Elmar-R 28-70mm 3.5-4.5 lens, motor winder, winder handgrip and boxes, manuals, etc. for all. I should pick it up next week, so then I'll see if the "virtually unused condition" description is accurate. It comes at what I think is a good price, from an auction house which I have previously found to be reliable :D. Regards, David

Thanks for the info. re the diopter adjustment. I didn't know about this and it will certainly help my eyes too. Also, if enough votes are gained in "JAAPV"'s survey, we can have a separate "R" section :p.

As Jaap posted above, if you want a separate R forum then vote in this poll. Andreas has agreed that if there are 50 people who vote for a separate R forum before Photokina starts then he will do so. Currently 49 people have voted for a separate R forum.

I use the Leica RE for more than 20 years besides my Leicaflexes SL and I must say it is a very reliable camera. I have never had technical problems with it...

Almost a lifetime camera so far....;)

We have a lot of R users in the forum. I personally have no experience with RE so no comments on that.

I enjoy using Leicaflexes and I also use R6.2 and R8 along with other Leica Ms.

I have Leitaxed R50/2, R90/2.8 and APO extenders 1.4x and 2x to use my other R lenses on my Nikon.

I've had a Leicaflex SL since 1969, got an R4 when new, and later added an R6. They are all nice, but with my aging eyes I prefer the M series, as I can focus them faster and more accurately. (I've tried autofocus dSLRs and hate autofocus.) If Leica had released a Digital R (with pentaprism optical finder) I probably would have bought one.

Most of my photography is better suited to a rangefinder.

I am glad there is a new R-forum.

I just got a roll of Provia 100F back from the lab. I shot it with my R8 and a variety of lenses.

I will have to fire up the scanner and get some of them digitized tomorrow.

Happy Shooting,

JCA
