rivi1969 Posted July 7, 2016 Share #1007 Posted July 7, 2016 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Life can be complicated the Leica M8 is simple. An iconic iteration of a classic piece of mid century design. It is beautifully made, really solid yet precise and elegant at the same time. Rangefinders aren't for everyone but to me there is great calm and simplicity in the mechanical link between the focus mechanism and the lens. I like to make the comparison with high end hifi where there is often only an on off switch and a volume control. The focus is on the clearest path between the recording and the listener. It may be a 10 year old camera but mine works well and the raw DNG files are great to work with. I am glad to celebrate the 10th b'day of my M8, my favourite camera along my Canon 5D, which happens to be also a relic for today's standards! mike_j Posted July 17, 2016 Share #1008 Posted July 17, 2016 I sometimes use my M8 for old times sake, usually on on B&W, but, at the risk of being burned at the stake for heresy, I'm afraid that, in my opinion, both my Sony A7 full frame and A6000 APS cameras have much better image quality and are far more usable. This was brought home forcibly to me yesterday when I took both the M8 and A6000 to the John Clare Festival and took near identical pictures on the two cameras. The M8 is a 10 year old camera and wasn't outstanding IQ in the first place. It shows against a top modern sensor. I'm going to hide in the shed now. mike_j Posted July 17, 2016 Share #1011 Posted July 17, 2016 (edited) I'm knocking on your shed door... Were you comparing colour results or B&W? Ernst Be careful - I have a gun in here (OK only an Olympus T20 flashgun but even so ...) I was comparing colour, the situation called for colour. The M8 is pretty good in B&W and it's the only reason I use it normally but I haven't compared it like for like with the Sonys. I will do so when the opportunity arises but I suspect that the Sony higher dynamic range will give it the edge. Guest Posted July 17, 2016 Share #1012 Posted July 17, 2016 What is your early impression of the difference between the Monochrom and the M8 in image quality? Ernst well, the monochrom is an ccd cam like the m8, so the files show certain parallels. the clearness and the sharpness of the m8 files (at lower iso) are legendary, he mono shows the same characteristic in perfection. the high iso quality is impressive and for me the most important point. iso 10000 with the mono seems to look like 1600 with the m8. however i like the unique concept of this cam, the mono is easy to handle, the resolution is amazing the files are perfect for my workflow, i´m able to produce the look i prefer http://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/262457-balkonien/ for me it ´s the ultimate ccd leica, the m8 is great for black and white, the mono is just perfect! of course i will keep my m8, it´s still a great cam. and it´s always better to have some more leicas lambda. david strachan Posted July 17, 2016 Share #1013 Posted July 17, 2016 Yes, the files are good to work with the M8, alright. And Lambda so true with the perfect base ISO.... As you know, I have two M8's and that allows me to be a bit more lens flexibility. I've done over 20k shots and no problems requiring technicians on my two. It is still my go-to camera but always have the Fuji XE1 around; for live-view, macro and flash. As I understand the M8-M9 were all CCD and made to emulate Kodachrome 64(?). The files sharpen very well in LR and CS4...even with older film lenses! Modern Fuji lenses on the XE1 are very sharp...all huge zooms, very capable but, to me, not nice to use. The tiny old LTM lenses are fantastic. The Leica-C 90mm, very affordable a classic. It's a wonderful camera. All the best...

CranberryFotografie Posted July 24, 2016 Share #1020 Posted July 24, 2016 Hello everyone. I'll count this post as my official entry to the forum. A forum I learned so much from and that helped me a lot when deciding on Leica as a fotografic tool.I am Michael, am 21years young and from Germany. Fotografy is my passion and Leica makes it just that little bit more enjoying and exciting I started out with a Leica M4-2 as I love film... and recently acquired an M8.2. My only lens is a voigtländer 35 1.7 Asph. Ultron lens. The picture I attach here shows me at a fotowalk in Heidelberg where a good friend lent me his 28mm summicron and snapped this picture. I'll also attach one picture of that day (made with voigtländer ultron) as one of many to follow! I'm hoping for a good time with all of you and plan to elaborate more on why I love Leica and the M8.2 (in this forum ) in particular! So, Hi everyone - I am excited!
