None of them having used a Leica lens on the 5D if i understand well. Funny that an old Leica user like me can find the Canon better than his Ms and Rs with Leica lenses. Difficult to compare film to digital though.
Errr...Using a Leica lens magically removes the AA filter and changes the sensor from CMos into CCD?

Well i don't like big crop cams my friend ;) and i'm not blind fortunately. What i've seen from the DMR sounds very good really but my little piccies are not that crappy either. Ignorance is bliss perhaps. :D

I'll second that emotion. :D

Always amazing when people speak about things they have no experience with. To what end, I have no idea. For those that haven't had the extreme pleasure of using the DMR, I can't for the life of me understand why one would prognosticate in ignorance.

Ben -

This reminds me of when Apple announced the iPad and Forum members in countries that had not yet had the device released prognosticated about how bad it was and they'd never buy one.

There are other alternatives to the 5D... I don't like the files that Canons produce and never have. That's why I went down a different path.

I have taken the same shot (albeit at different times) with both the DMR and the D700. There is nothing wrong with the files that the Nikon produces, at all.

"The 20D and 5D files can't come close the the M8 and DMR in terms of dynamic range, fine detail in highlights and shadows; as especially in recovery of true, noise free shadow detail in post processing."

Well i don't want to convince anyone here, it's the Leica forum after all and i'm using too many brands for that. All i can say is i don't share the quoted point of view at all as far as 5D1 and M8 are concerned. Wonder which raw converter was used to do this curious comparo.

Well I don't doubt Andy's view at all. I didn't go down either the Canon or Nikon route but my 24.8 mpx Sony A900 with Zeiss AF lenses takes some beating and a definite improvement on my old DMR/R9 with regard to dynamic range, if exposed correctly. I believe that the Nikon sensors are produced by Sony.

The Alpha lens bayonet is the old Minolta fitting and there are plenty of excellent Minolta G lenses around to satisfy the need for superb optics when the Zeiss/Sony range runs out of focal length. After all, the early R lenses were of Minolta design! :D

However there are many who believe that the optical viewfinder with mirror reflex system as we know it in DSLR design is already out of date and will be replaced by translucent mirror designs in the future even for pro design cameras. I am more than satisfied with my A900 with it's class leading OVF so I hope not, but never say never!

YMMV... The person I bought my backup R8/DMR from replaced it with the A900 and he prefers the DMR's color quality.

I expect that there will be very few problems with mirror interference when adapting R lenses to Alpha, because Leitz adopted the Minolta mirror box spec in 1974 with the SL2. However only a few early R lenses were Minolta designs.

I agree, the 5D (and mark II) have highlight headroom for days, the M9 at least I know has much less. However, the 5D (and even moreso the mark II) have bugger all shadow latitude, push the shadows even a little and you get buckets of banding and splotchy red noise that is very difficult to remove. At lower ISO's the M9 has tons hidden in the shadows that can be brought out with very little degradation to the image.

I shot a lot of the best leica glass on a 5D Mark II (19 v2, 28 latest, 35 cron and lux, 50 lux E60, 90AA, 100Apo) and the M9 with every lens I've put on it - even the 12mm Voigtlander - produces higher detail files at comparable focal lengths. I also find that I shoot handheld at 1/60 for live music, where I needed 1/180 with the 5D, and I shoot at ISO1000 (surprisingly clean setting!) where I needed ISO1600 in the 5D.

Horses for courses though, of course.

Hello all.

After having a play with my R equipment last weekend I'm wondering if we have any reports on R lenses being used with either the EOS 5D Mk III or the Nikon D800.

Thank you. Rick.

I just took possession of my D800, I say took possession as it's been waiting for me at home since late June, and I just landed back last night. I'm charging the battery as I'm typing these words. I may indeed Leitax some of my R lenses to use on my D800. However, for what it's worth, I am honestly happy with most of my Nikon lenses and thus I don't feel that compelled to use R lenses on my Nikon bodies...

Oh yes I do use my Leica camera straps with my D800 and D700, at least that's one piece of Leica R equipment recycled... I guess I have indeed moved on... My DMR now sitting idle in a corner...

I agree, well past the time to move on. Canikon and Sony all produce excellent lenses and have the advantage of using them AF or MF. Each have their own characteristics to suit individual preferences. Like it or not, the DMR is now well and truly obsolete.

Amen to it's memory as it was a great piece of engineering, producing superb 16bit files. The fact remains that technology has moved on and modern sensors and processors are producing higher resolution with more sensitivity, excellent OOC jpegs with improved dynamic range.

On top of that, I find the reliability of R8/9 is getting worse - and I have a stack of unrepairable bodies to prove it. I still use the DMR from time to time, but it is time to move on.

Well, yes and it still produces suberb files. Used R8s are under 500 Euro and can be replaced ( what was that old chestnut about film bodies holding their value btw?:()- if you are within reach of courier services. Not an option for some uses.
