Hello All. I didn't expect to get feedback, so thanks. I developed hp5 in Ilfosol 3 and used fotospeed sb50 stop bath and Ilford fixer.

 

I think by reducing the pic from 12.3mb as a tiff to a 63k jpg hasn't helped and made the shot look more grainier.

 

I am using an Epson v550 scanner.

 

Personally, I don't think that I have the exposure quite right on this shot. I am now using a lens hood which I find does help whatever anyone says.(I think Ken Rockwell. who I rate said the Elmar didn't need one?)

 

I have only been doing this for over a year and the iiif definitely gives better pictures with the summitar but when I get it right with the 1A ,especially when using the Fodis, it is such a good feeling!

I think lens hoods always help, especially in older uncoated lenses. Not as old a lens as yours but Malcolm Taylor just cleaned my 40mm Summicron-C and there is now noticeably less veiling glare. It is still better with a hood. I keep meaning to get a neat hood for my 50/2 Summitar, as I hate the barn door I have (and never use). HeavyStar do a nice ventilated one.

Re lens hoods: I have never handled the 'barndoor' hood for the Summitar but have never seen a more cumbersome devise fitted to a Leica. However, it looks like the most effective hood ever made by Leica. I would never use use one but find the vented model by Heavystar to be a great improvement (for reducing flare) for both my Summitar and Summicron.

 

Evidence is quite clear that using a lens hood is a definite advantage in most situations. Since you can never be sure which situation will benefit, the only choice is to always use one. Think about how often you shade your eyes with your hand or a hat to avoid flare. Why would it be any different for your camera lens?

If you ever handled it, you would never call it cumbersome again. If you store it separately you fold the barndoor and it becomes the lens hood which needs the smallest space; fits every little shirt pocket without bulging. On the lens it does not look very Jonathan-Ive-like, but it does not intrude into your view though the viewfinder or rangefinder if you use it properly on an LTM camera. You won't find many other hoods for a rangefinder lens which don't in one way or other. And most important: nobody thinks you are using a camera to take photos; some people take it for a very special means of measuring others for a device to catch insects or little birds.

I would no more use my barn door, that I would choose to go out cycling on a penny farthing bicycle. :)

 

The hinges are a bit worn on mine and the doors stick just when you need to open them quickly. I have to admit I don’t use my IIF and Summitar a whole lot anyway, as (heresy, heresy), I prefer my Contax IIA/50 f1,5 Opton Sonnar for a camera of that age or more often for a film camera, I use either my M4 or one of my Rolleiflexes.

My other camera is a iiif. I have Summitar f2 50mm and Elmar f4 90mm lenses. These two shots were taken with the Elmar

New and standing up to be counted!

IIIa (1936), 50mm 3.5 Elmar red scale, post-war Summitar, late 35mm 3.5 Summaron. I put the first film through this camera for 30 years, last week. I wonder what it will be like? The shutter speeds seemed ok, but . . .

The scan of the ducks looks sharp enough. The Summitar is definitely up to scratch (oops!). The scan seems a bit flat. I would adjust the black pt and white pt to give more sparkle. Your choice of course.

Leica II (model D) black paint as replacement for my broken IIIc.

 

The elmar came with the IId. I find it to produce slightly warm colours in my GXR - I wonder if that's typical rendering? My concern is that colors are exaggerated when shot with Portra?

 

The summicron rendered nicely on my IIIc (hopefully I will too on the IId).

Thanks. The third lens is the Voigtlander Nokton 1.5; I wanted to take a look of what it would look like on a small body :) Proportion wise it appears like a "beast" on the IId, but in real life I don't think it looks that bad.

Due to it's size it does block the lower half of both the viewfinder and the right rangefinder window, so it's usage on the IId is somewhat limited. Curiously it's much lighter than the summicron making it less front heavy. I only wish it was collapsible.

But how adjusted those lucky guys at their Leicas formerly the distance exactly, who possessed a rare Summarex 1.5-85mm?

Hopefully not going too much stray and off topic: Just out of curiosity how light or heavy it is? Also judging by the pictures of the persimmons is must not be easy to focus wide open.
