I guess it's a Canon IVSb or similar...?

BINGO - a winner! Didn't even need the next hint I'd prepared:

Still waiting for the 50 1.1 Zunow lens that used to be on the camera - but he is working on it.

Small question to experts, from what time date these Bakelite lens caps?

"A priori", I would say from 1931 to 1932, I've seen another Leica I Mod C with the same cap, and the owner claimed to have it since his discover of the camera.

Personally I find it even more flattering than traditional brass caps.

My 1932 Model II came with the bakelite lens cap. I assume it was original as the camera and Hektor lens were discovered in a wardrobe in Berlin when the owner sadly did not return from war.

Justin, was that you driving a BRG sports coupe along Beach road on the W/E?

If so, you nearly ran Merlin and me down. :D

Only caught a glimpse but I reckon it was you, solemnly enjoying leading the silver metal-bodied beauty following you.

Hi John,

Not guilty.

Furthermore I never drive solemnly!

Cheers,

Justin

PS Maybe your "vision" is not unique.

What timing :D A Barnack challenge is issued and this just arrived in a surprisingly small box, never mind the camera I'm converted ;)

I did a virtual swap meet with Tom Abrahamsson. A batch of Tessina and Nikon cassettes went to Vancouver and I was lucky enough to receive this beautiful camera.(Lens and finder were mine.)

First roll is in, some Rollei Retro 100S and should be out again later today.

Chris, that is exciting news. You will love that camera. Get stuck into the Barnack Competition. It is all about being involved and having a purpose to use that fabulous gear.

I will be interested to see how your Rollei 100S goes. I had a disaster with my foray into it. I am sticking to films I know, but I hope you have better luck.

  • 3 weeks later...

WOW - what a long thread, but fascinating. You can (sort of) count me in...I just purchased a recently CLA'd Leotax LTM body which should arrive near the end of the month. I looked for an inexpensive Elmar or collapsible Summicron to mount on it, but in the end found a really nice Canon Serenar 50 f/1.8 which is due to arrive tomorow. I still have my collapsible 50 Summicron from my Leica M days, which I've been using on my micro 4/3 body, and checked to see if it was an LTM with an M adapter on it, but no dice...so I'll be putting it up for sale in the near future.

I had promised myself to get rid of most of the cameras I no longer use, and not buy anything, but I guess I got hooked. Funny, though...in the early 1990s my office was in an affluent community across the street from a large family owned camera shop which had tons of Leica gear, and I'd go over there at lunchtime and salivate over the newer Leica stuff. The showcase next in line was the used LTM gear, Leicas, Niccas, Towers, Leotaxes and Canon LTM bodies, plus stacks of LTM lenses...all selling for a song (when they sold, which wasn't very often)...nobody wanted them.

Well, in a few weeks I'll have the opportunity to try out the LTM gear and compare the results to my other RF bodies...maybe I'll be reducing the weight on my shelves after all.

There is supposedly a small difference in the focusing rate (not the flange focal distance) of Nikon and Leotax (Simlar) LTM lenses to Leica LTM lenses. I think that Dante Stella has written a long article on this matter. For optimal sharpness on a Leotax body, you might be better sticking to a Leotax or Nikon LTM lens rather than going for a Leica One. This is, according to Dante Stella, the same reason why Russian built lenses, which seem perfectly sharp on FED and Zorki bodies, are less than wonderful performers on Leica bodies, other than at infinity.
