Update did go painlessly.

+1 not sure how I like the idea of embedding camera serial nr in the image... I mean this goes a long way, its like fingerprint on the image, so if Im not sure I want to be associated with a posted image I better save it and strip all info from the file before posting. hmm. note to self - don't photograph as politially charged events with my Leica ? :D

I updated the fw in both cameras with no problem. Didn't have time for careful testing but I may tomorrow.

Does anyone know if the update changes the card write speed? In other words, should we still be using Ultra II cards or will there now be a speed improvement by switching to the faster Extreme III cards?

Could somebody explain this improvement? For me is not so clear. I would like to know a bit more about this!

Cheers

The vignetting correction applies lightens up the corners which also means more noise. This is no nuisance in low ISO but may be one in high ISO settings. So they reduced the correction for high ISO to reduce noise.

There have been many demands for the embedding of the serial numbers in this forum - even when some people had the same reservations about this topic as you mention. There is a way to suppress the serial number in the EXIF of a published photo - I don't know how it works, perhaps you find something about it in earlier threads about this "issue".

As a new Leica person and M9 owner I'm impressed with the responsiveness of Leica in making these improvements.

I'm glad you are pleased. I would only add that since the release of the M9 on 9/9/09, it took Leica six months and six days to deliver the goods. It's just my opinion, but that is an awfully long time in the digital age.

Rome wasn't built in a day, but the Empire State Building was built in one year. Why? Because the developer and contractors brought every available resource to the task. How many people does it take to revise FW for a digital camera? I can't imagine that it would take one person so long, working in conjunction with Leica staffers. So while I am happy to see the improvements, I would have liked to see it addressed over a matter of 3 months or less, not 6 months. I am anxious to see how much, if any, real improvement there is with the red fringing.

Just noticed a bug... Not sure if this is new to the latest fw, but haven't noticed this in the past.

If you have the camera set to auto power off after 2 minutes and you are previewing images, the camera will still power off even in mid stream of clicking thru images. It requires you to re awaken the camera by touching the shutter release, but it brings you back to the last image recorded instead of where you were.

The camera should be smart enogh to realize you are reviewing images and not shut off unless 2 minutes of no activity have occurrd.

I never noticed this on previous build.

No need the firmware is freely available to all from the German website. No requirement to have registered your camera (not that I have any problems with that).

Leica Camera AG - Downloads

Frustrating. I can't seem to enter the sight despite having registered. Keeps giving me the Catch-22 when I try and retrieve my password.

Anyone want to send me the update file? My email address is on the contact page of my website.

Thanks,

Charles

I am curious...does the new firmware give a option to manually select the 18/3.8 now. I have been using the WATE at 18 for my Zeiss 18/4 without good results. Of course cornerfix solves that problem. Thanks!

No. Because the manual selections available are only for Leica lenses that were available as uncoded versions. The new 18 and all of the newer lenses since 6 bit introduction have always been coded.

I got excellent results with the M8 using the WATE code for the ZM 18 I had then. I don't have it any longer to try on the M9.

I am as happy as anyone that this improvements finally arrived -- and i love the camera -- but responsive Leica was NOT in getting this done. This fixes address basic shortcomings -- eg, incompatibility with major sd card brands and painfully slow zooming -- that should have been working correctly on day one and as such this update brings the camera up to where is should have been on day one.

+1 A lot of stuff finally works as it should have at launch--just six months late.

So, has anyone tried their Leica lenses for "red edge" correction?

I just tried my 21mm f/2.8 Elmarit-M ASPH and I have to say the results are disappointing. In fact, it might even be a bit worse. Unfortunately, I didn't think of taking a before and after image under identical conditions, but the fact remains that the problem is still there.

I'm not a happy camper at the moment.

Hadn't registered my M9, so went ahead and did that. Downloaded the firmware, installed, everything works fine. Nice to have the zoom and SD card formating working quickly. Can't say the thumbnails were 'off' before, but look fine now. Camera has no problem (as before) with my SanDisk Extreme III SDHC 16GB 30MB/s card (no listed)

Has anyone had any issues with the Magenta colour shift on a 24mm Elmarit? I see it is not listed in the 'wide angle lenses improved'.

The new firmware takes care of a few issues and the wonderful M9 a better camera, very happy with it.

I updated my M9 to 1.116 and immediately noticed two issues:

1- I have Auto Power Off set to a minute and the camera shuts itself off after a minute even if I'm busy scrolling through the menus. Never happened before. Very annoying.

2- When the camera is switched off and I press the shutter release button, the rear LED blinks briefly each time, as if the camera is not actually powered off. This didn't happen with the previous firmware.

What gives?
