brianv Posted July 24, 2012 Share #604 Posted July 24, 2012 (edited) The "Gulfarium" in Fort Walton Beach, Florida was opened in 1955. Same year as the 9cm F4 Collapsible Elmar used wide-open on the M8 for this shot. Newly renovated, looks better than ever. I have been going their since a kid for the last 45 years or so. Nikki also enjoys it, makes it even better. Edited July 25, 2012 by brianv

jcrutcher Posted July 29, 2012 Share #609 Posted July 29, 2012 yes Summar not Sonnar, my mistake in typing. Soft on the M8 but nice!
wlaidlaw Posted July 29, 2012 Share #610 Posted July 29, 2012 Is that a 1937 Summar on the chrome M8? I've converted pre-war Sonnars to Leica Mount. Brian, Pre War Sonnars were available from the factory in LTM but are not common, as they were more expensive than the equivalent Leica lenses. I also believe there was a short run of post war Sonnars in LTM from Jena in the DDR. Krasnogorsky also made some of their Sonnar copies (made on the original machinery liberated from Jena) in LTM. It is called a Jupiter but I forget the number for the f1.5 in LTM. The f2 version is a Jupiter 8. Like all Soviet lenses, the quality varies from superb to paper weight. I use a post war Opton (FDR) Sonnar on my Leica M's with an Amadeo Muscelli mount. On a thread which I cannot now find, I posted comparative shots of the same scene taken with 1953 50/2 Summitar, 1954 50/1.5 Sonnar and 2008 50/f2 Planar. It showed as you might expect, that the Sonnar was quite a bit better than the Summitar but not as good as the modern Planar. All taken on an M9. brianv Posted July 29, 2012 Share #611 Posted July 29, 2012 (edited) I was loaned a 1934 5cm F1.5 Sonnar made in Leica mount: it was a prototype. I will upload some pictures of it. The focal length was the Zeiss standard, and it fell short of infinity focus. Only a handful were made. Very different from the wartime Sonnars. I've ended up with a collection of Sonnars. My conversion trick: the prewar and wartime (up to SN 3M) F1.5 Sonnars fit into the Jupiter-3 focus mount, the F2 Sonnars fit into the Jupiter-8 mount. My converted 1934 Sonnar 5cm F1.5 using a J-3 mount. This lens was originally in Contax mount. 1934 Sonnar, converted to Leica by anachronist1, on Flickr An original 1934 Zeiss Sonnar in LTM mount. sonnar3 by anachronist1, on Flickr sonnar2 by anachronist1, on Flickr This would not have been practical for production, look at that exposed helical! I use a modern C-Sonnar on the M8. So we would not want the M9 to be too jealous. Edited July 29, 2012 by brianv
brianv Posted July 29, 2012 Share #612 Posted July 29, 2012 (edited) This is what the converted 5cm f2 Sonnar looks like in the Jupiter-8 mount: RIMG0363 anachronist1, The threads of the mount can be filed down to allow ~0.75m on the M cameras. Threads and shims are all the same, the J-8 aperture ring replaces the original "winged" ring of the Sonnar. This is a 30 minute conversion job. Anything to get more old glass for the M8! wlaidlaw Posted July 29, 2012 Share #613 Posted July 29, 2012 Here is a pic of the Amadeo Muscelli adapter for Contax 50 lenses to Leica M. This is one of the first M fit ones he made and although beautifully machined, sadly the coding pits are not quite in the correct position, so it will not pick up on M8 or 9. Below is the Opton Sonnar, made in Stuttgart in 1954, on the adapter + M9. It makes a very neat little f1.5 lens and the Leica Summilux ASPH f1.4 seems very large and heavy in comparison. The only downside is very slow focusing and it is easy to move the aperture when focusing. Wilson Welcome, dear visitor! Wilson, I'm surprised to hear that your coding pits are mispositioned because I have two Amadeo Muscelli adaptors like yours, one for Contax lenses and one for Nikon, and my M9-P picks up the coding on both without a problem. Having conversed with Amadeo, who is a very pleasant gentleman who cares deeply about the quality of the products he manufactures, I feel sure that if you contacted Amadeo he would want to make it right. Since he lives in Venezuela, which has draconian import and export procedures, he might even swap like for like to avoid complications. I agree that the adaptors are beautifully machined and designed and made to last. Pete.

Pete, As I use the adapter almost exclusively on the M9 rather than M8, it is not an issue as I can manually set the lens. I use my M8 pretty much all the time on a Visoflex now. I did tell Amadeo and I got back "oh dear - sorry about it - don't understand how that happened" but no offer to replace. Wilson
jcrutcher Posted July 29, 2012 Share #617 Posted July 29, 2012 It rained last night in Phoenix, today the cactus are blooming. M8 with 50mm Summicron Collapsible (1952) M8 with 50mm Summar (1937). This was last night in the rain. We have only had 1 inch of rain all year, we average 7 inches, so the rain gods need to stop by.
