Very slow formatting SD card

I love my Leica M9. :)But what to say about the time that you need to format the SanDisk HD 8 Gb ! Is 5 minutes normal?

I don't think so, its 'only' (thats a laugh) about 29 seconds for a 16gb Extreme card.

Only if you mistakenly chose "overwrite" There is new firmware coming...

You are right! When I take the choise "Yes", then I need "only" 1 minute.

Presumably it writes over the actual data on the card, instead of just blowing away the master file table. It should probably take less time than 1min to do a fast format, I guess it will be fixed in the new firmware (it was fixed in a firmware update for the M8).

You are absolutely right, it is longer than 29 seconds, but I just had to try again and I made it 42 seconds this time (can't think where the 29 seconds came from). This revelation of some variation in time taken opens up the possibility of a formatting Grand Prix using the M9. Is it possible to tune an SD card, like polish up the contacts or drill holes in it to lighten it?
