After discussion, those of us involved in producing the book have decided that it is silly to exclude M9 photographs from being submitted....

Pity that you exclude X1 owners though... Just kidding, excluding exclusions is the only way to include inclusions sometimes. :D

Blurb is a good choice. I have seen a couple of others but they weren't as good. Blurb did an excellent and speedy job on my book which was not for publication. Good luck - I hope plenty of people enter.

You know, I'd love to contribute, really love to. And the amount definitely isn't the issue, if one can afford Leica equipment then he or she can certainly afford the ten quid equivalent. But I am a long time volunteer (16+ years) with the Canadian Cancer Society, so I'm conflicted. I recently renewed my Leica film use and am glad I did. I'm no ace photographer but would like to contribute; I have my moments, near magic results. I'll have a think about this one.

Congratulations on organizing such a worthwhile project. I am sorry to ask, but can you tell me, or direct me to a site which explains how to convert a PSD in Photoshop to a jpeg that is less than 293 kb. At this time I shoot with a M8, raw develop in Aperature, optimize in CS4 to get a master file with all layers etc, then target for a specific size, flatten, sharpen, then print on Epson 3800. I send emails with images from Aperature, but I have no experience converting, and sending fully developed images from Photoshop. Thank for your help.

Welcome to the forum ! The 293Kb limit for jpg is the one used in this forum to post images, so many of us are accustomed to do such format, and so it has been choosen also for the submission of pictures to this project.

To reach this limit in Photoshop is rather easy... basically, you start RESIZING the PSD image in itself (<image size>) to a proper dimension in cm/inches or pixels... personally I use pixels: something around 800-900 for long side is usually sufficient, then you save it in jpg, choosing a quality level around 10: the wizard gives you an evaluation of the resulting file size; playing with dimension and jpg quality you easily learn how to obtain the limit without giving up too much quality in colors. Of course, the jpg file is useful only for this publishing goal (or for very small "test" prints)

I don't see how there is a conflict here, as the ACIR support charties around the world, including Canada. The entry fee is only £10 per shot, which is the cost of 4 coffees in Starbucks over here. Hardly a huge commitment for a one off donation.

There are a thousand and one ways to do this, but the steps I take are...

Duplicate the image - you don't want to accdentally overwrite the original

Resize the duplicate so that it has a maximum side length of 960 pixels

Sharpen the duplicate

Flatten the duplicate

Convert the image to the sRGB colour space

Use "Save for web" to adjust the file size to 293k or less, and then save the duplicate

Job done. The convert to sRGB is also an option in "save to web", but so it can be done there if required rather than as a separate step.
