I’m presently on safari in Tanzania. I’ve got an internet connection at our lodge and wanted to share these images from yesterday’s helicopter flight over Ol Doinyo Lengai Volcano (Mountain of God in Maasai), and Lake Natron.

Ol Doinyo Lengai is an active volcano 9800 feet high, which last erupted in 2010. The last eruption completely changed the shape of the top of the mountain.

We made a couple of attempts to land at the top but the winds were too strong.

Below it sits Lake Natron which is a salt lake with hot springs. The red coloured water of the lake is produced by a red photosynthesizing pigment in cyanobacteria. Salt-loving Microorganisms that live in the lake produce the alkali crust which takes on the different colours.

Thanks for viewing.
