Agent M10 Posted November 16, 2008 Share #1 Posted November 16, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Apparently, eBay is a dangerous place these days. I put in a lowball offer on an SL2 just on a whim and just found out that I won the auction. I understand that the SL2 won't take ROM lenses so I am interested in what the best lenses are for the camera.

Overgaard Posted November 16, 2008 Share #5 Posted November 16, 2008 If it's you first R camera (you're used to M, right?), I can recommend 35mm/2.8, 50mm/2.0, 80mm/1.4 The 19mm/2.8 pictured above is surpassed greatly by the newer edition which I don't know if can be gotten without the ROM contacts. But anything without ROM will go (as far as I know). Some "LeicaFlex only" lenses exist (1 cam) and sometimes those are very inexpensive, sometimes very expensive. You can use any lens on it, as lon as ti doesn't have the electronic ROM contacts. But 3-cam lenses will work from LeicaFlex up to current R9. But log into http://www.wildlightphoto.com/LeicaReflex/ which is Dough's place with info on all R lenses. You will need a login from him, which I'm sure he will gladly provide. His website with contact info is http://www.wildlightphoto.com

Agent M10 Posted November 16, 2008 Author Share #7 Posted November 16, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks for the advice guys. Yep, my R9 lenses are all ROM. Instead of changing them out, I thought I'd go ahead and do the lowball thing again on eBay for lenses. Since I have a Noct for my M, I'm interested in the fastest and sharpest lenses available in the cam whateveryoucallit. I'm thinking of one wide angle and then one over 100mm (I have a 100 APO already). And where do you get a battery for one of these things? I will say that I'm pretty used to the M so I'm looking forward to seeing how the S2 feels. The R9 seems kinda clunky in my hands now.
steed Posted November 17, 2008 Share #8 Posted November 17, 2008 my SL and SL2 work perfectly using the Wein cells that substitute for the original battery. Some actually convert the voltage of the circuit and use a different battery. The Wein cell is really all you need, in my opinion. Make sure the meter is still accurate. Good luck John W
masjah Posted November 17, 2008 Share #9 Posted November 17, 2008 Just in case you aren't aware of this, some lenses were made as "3rd cam only", as distinct from "3 cam". The latter can of course be used on an SL2 (as has been said, you need cams 1 and 2 to be present) but the former can not. The reason I mention this is because sometimes "3rd cam only" lenses are wrongly described as "3 cam". For example, a friend of mine recently got an SL2 and wanted a suitable 50/2, as his own was 3rd cam only. He saw one advertised by a dealer as 3 cam, rang the dealer to confirm that it was indeed 3 cam, bought it, and on delivery, found it was 3rd cam only! (The dealer was however, most apologetic, and took the lens back with a full refund, including my friend's postage costs.)
lct Posted November 17, 2008 Share #10 Posted November 17, 2008 ...The reason I mention this is because sometimes "3rd cam only" lenses are wrongly described as "3 cam"... Yes good advice, John. My 3rd cam 50/2 is engraved 'for Leica R only'. Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! Guest liesevolvo Posted November 17, 2008 Share #11 Posted November 17, 2008 Peter, if You think about a cheap 100-plus-lens, You could look for the 2.8/135. Very low prices, lots on the market, easy handling. Beware of lens-separation, happens sometimes. As Jan said: In 90 mm the early 2.8/90 is first choice from price and quality. I'm using it a lot more than the 2/90. If You think about 'stretching' the range: I had the 2,8/180 and sold it soon, monstrous weight, terrible handling! The 4/180 is said to be one of the 'not so good' Leitz lenses (of course we all know, they don't build bad lenses ), but I like it because of low weight and size. The Apo-Telyt 3.4/180 is much better (but longer and much more expensive), I'm glad to have both. And, yes: The SL2 ist a wonderful camera, probably the most sophisticated mechanical SLR-camera ever, as the M5 was in RF. Both together brought Leitz to the frontiers of economical ruin... Cells? As said: Weincells for meter, cheap 'normal' cells for meter-illumination. I always have some 'Weins' in stock, because my SL, my M5, my SL2s (3) need them. Three SL2s? An amateur? Must be mad!!! Not really. Because this camera ist so extremely complex, major need of repair ends as an economic disaster. So I decided to buy three (during last 18 months, so really unexpensive) at a price (all together) lower than one real intensive repair, all three running perfectly. Have fun! Lenn, Cologne/Germany By the way: A month ago I bought an M5 at 66 percent of the price, that a complete overhaul of that camera at the factory in 2004 has been (I have he bill!). Friends of mechanical Leicas are living in paradise now. Excuse my English.
Agent M10 Posted November 17, 2008 Author Share #12 Posted November 17, 2008 Geez Louise, I didn't know how complicated this could be. What is a Wein cell and where do you get one of those? As I am pretty well-equipped with my M lenses, this camera will probably be used just here and there. Is there a "signature" lens out there? One that you can't bear to go without? jaapv Posted November 17, 2008 Share #14 Posted November 17, 2008 I think it takes PX 625A cells. I had some listed on the B&S forum, but the ad seems to have disappeared. So did a buyer...PM me if you want them.
gvaliquette Posted November 17, 2008 Share #15 Posted November 17, 2008 What is a Wein cell and where do you get one of those? Peter: Also check out these adapters: MR-9 Mercury Battery Adapter I have two of them, for my Leica CL and the MR meter on my M4-2. Their advantage is that the 386 battery they use has a much longer life than the Wein cells and the adapter itself, of course, lasts forever. They work flawlessly. wildlightphoto Posted November 18, 2008 Share #16 Posted November 18, 2008 Is there a "signature" lens out there? One that you can't bear to go without? 90mm Summicron-R (any 2- or 3-cam pre-APO model) 60mm Macro-Elmarit-R (any 2- or 3-cam model) 400mm f/6.8 Telyt Although the SL2 requires only the first two cams you'll be able to use the lenses on the R9 as well if they are 3-cam. JBA Posted November 18, 2008 Share #17 Posted November 18, 2008 I can also vouch for the 90 Summicron-R and would also add the 180 3.4 Apo, which is the lens that got me into the R system in the first place.
Agent M10 Posted November 20, 2008 Author Share #18 Posted November 20, 2008 The SL2 came in and have to say that I'm a bit impressed. Has the feel of an M. I have the 90 cron for the R9 so I won't go for that. Also have a 50 Lux ROM. What is the best 180mm to get for it? I'm confused about the 2.8s and 3.4s. I'm looking into the 60mm - besides Doug, anyone else recommend this lens? I haven't looked at R equipment in quite a long time.
Guest liesevolvo Posted November 20, 2008 Share #19 Posted November 20, 2008 In my opinion 2.8/180 is a mother-in-law-basher, while the 3.4/180 is certainly one of the best lenses ever built by Leitz. Lenn
