Shootist Posted February 17, 2009 Share #21 Posted February 17, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) My 50 Elmar has a serial # starting with 3917. My 50 Cron starts with 399 which was bought new 2 years ago and came coded. So it seems my Elmar is of a fairly new version but maybe not the newest. lct Posted February 17, 2009 Share #22 Posted February 17, 2009 All Elmar 50's tubes have not the same physical length. The one with the M6J (1996) for instance is a bit longer than both my 2004 and 1962 versions.
biglouis Posted April 30, 2009 Share #23 Posted April 30, 2009 Missed the one I misguidedly sold last year so much, that I just bought a s/h last version, 6-bit coded, again. LouisB
4season Posted April 30, 2009 Share #24 Posted April 30, 2009 The 50mm Summarit or Summicron may be a better choice for the M8: Although I can collapse mine, M8 clearances are tight, and I don't recommend doing this.
bybrett Posted April 30, 2009 Share #25 Posted April 30, 2009 It's a great lens - http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/people/84757-wedding-days-arrival.html
Guest Ron (Netherlands) Posted April 30, 2009 Share #26 Posted April 30, 2009 Improved version of the classic 50/2.8. If you are faced with the choice of the old or the new version, I would choose the new one. At medium f stops very hard to find any difference between it and the latest Summicron 50/2 at the same stop.Teddy Price wise there is hardly any difference eigter... JLV Posted May 2, 2009 Share #28 Posted May 2, 2009 What about the former version? I saw one today for a very interesting price. (350 euros) Is it for B and W only? What type of signature? Does it fit the M8 without touching the shutter.? What about IQ? All comments very welcome. Best regrads, Jean-Luc
earleygallery Posted May 2, 2009 Share #29 Posted May 2, 2009 The former version is also an excellent lens, and perfectly fine for colour images being a coated lens. I expect in a direct comparison the new one will show more contrast and be a touch sharper.

lct Posted May 2, 2009 Share #32 Posted May 2, 2009 Thanks for the test, I only can see a clear difference in the last shot, where the 2004 lens is more sharp. Yes the latest version is sharper and more contrasty, so beware of blown highlights if you shoot digital. Bokeh looks a bit smoother with the latest version as well. Otherwise, the barrel of the former Elmars (before 1994) rotates when focusing which can be a problem for polar filters. Also, former Elmars have a focus knob contrary to the latest version. Rona!d Posted May 2, 2009 Share #34 Posted May 2, 2009 Damn, should stop thinking about selling my coded last version Whenever i see a MkII cat i could miss it Give me a good reason why i should keep the latest Cron (which I thought, should replace the Elmar). offshore Posted May 10, 2009 Share #39 Posted May 10, 2009 Do any members have this lens? If so, what is your impression of it? Owned the new version, not 6 bit coded, and sold it because of the difficulty I had (purely my impression) in the focusing and aperture rings being separated by the gap between them when the lens is open. In many ways I regret getting rid of it because it is very sharp with a beautiful bokeh. I used it on my M8 with no damage to anything when collapsed but I do admit to holding my breath the first time I gingerly collapsed it into the chamber. The image that is downloaded here is much sharper than it appears here. I don't know why but lately when I download images to this site they look like crap. Welcome, dear visitor!
