Ravenna is a well educated guess as this church is in the same time-frame and country as Sant Apollinare in Classe and San Vitale in Ravenna. San Vitale was the daddy of this style, copied widely, but San Vitale is a completely different 'Hagia' Byzantine design. So at least it's Italy.

France - The Franks only adopted Christianity a few years before this was built and so were probably sitting in mud huts.

A proper castle.

Bonus for the family who founded and developed it.

More like Valle D'Aosta. Fenis. It is typical Lombardy style, 14th C. It was a very strategic area at the time, indeed for centuries, into the Napoleonic period. Happy memories of the vineyards of Piedmonte and the Gianduja factory. A magical part of the world.

You're right sls. Very nice fresco's too, which are miraculously well kept (12th or 13th century) without any restaurations thus far.

Your turn!
