Will do. It is in nice shape with the usual modest wear. The L seal is gone, probably when it was last cleaned etc.

I have owned a good number of Leica bodies and this M2 is as good as any. Always amazing how a 50 year old Leica works like new.

The one I "wish I had never sold" was a black M3 I had purchased from Precision Camera back about 1982. Sold it to Chatterton because I "needed the money". Never a good excuse.

Austin has quite a few Leica users, many due to the influence of Russell Lee and Gary Winogrand. We all miss them greatly.

Jerry at Precision remembers Gary bringing in an old M body for repair: "The shutter speeds are off", said Gary. It was literally worn out. Probably had way over 1 million exposures.

Just joined the forum. Enjoying it so far,

I have used M cameras for over 30 years and progressed through various outfits over the years. I currently have a M6 outfit with 24 Elmarit M, 35 Summicron, 50 Summilux and 90 Elmarit M. Haven't been too tempted to get an M9.

Recently I was offered an M2 outfit that I could not pass up: 1958 M2 w/button rewind, 35 Summaron 3.5 (with M3 eyes), 50 DR Summicron and collapsible 90 Elmar, with MR meter and all hoods etc. The whole kit was probably purchased at one time and has been nicely kept. The body recently c&a'd. What a pleasure it is to use. You can tell how much better the old bodies and lenses were made. Just the feel of the film advance and focusing helicoids.

I like the way the 35 with eyes works on the M2. I like having space around the frame line. If I want the full viewfinder I can always pop on my Summicron.

Here are a couple of photos, 90 Elmar isn't included (for some reason)

Nice!

For the more knowledgeable, my M2 is 1959, lever rewind and self timer (in fact an upgraded M1 based on the serial no.). Somehow I always thought that button rewind came after lever rewind - apparently not?

I think it was like this chronologically:

Button rewind without selftimer, lever rewind without selftimer, lever rewind with selftimer.

Best, Rob

From the Hove Leica Pocket Book 7th edition p. 39: "Early models no self timer, 1959 numbers 949101 - 949400 some had self-timers, number 1004151 onwards all had self-timers. Early models button rewind. Later ones lever."

My favorite Instruments...

but I have to admit that I took the way over the M9. I appreciate that, too, but the M2 is the real thing.

I own an M3 also, but like the M2 better for it's 35mm-frame (but don't tell the guys in the M3-thread...).

I play the flute for many years now (hence my nick-name), I think a Leica is the mechanical equivalent to a Bach-Sonata...

Regards,

Claus

Here's my somewhat newly acquired M2 (a worthy partner to my M3):

My M2 has had a hard life. It was great for skiing this year. -18°C and no worries about the batteries going flat.

Kind of funny how the anodising of a Leica lens also shows up magenta on an M8 sensor. I have an E39 UV/IR on the way for the 50 summicron.
