usefeet Posted February 29, 2008 Share #1 Posted February 29, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) For most people, Friday is a working day. Some may be retired, and some may have the day off, but most go to work. A couple of days ago I thought I might go for a drive somewhere local and look for something to shoot, but for me, Friday turned out to be very busy, so I set aside an hour for the end of the day and went to the city mall with my M8 together with an (uncoded) 28mm/f2.0 Summicron asph. lens. I took less than 10 shots, and had to choose from 5 of my better images. The hardest part was to choose the one image to upload. I called my wife and then my son for help, but each of us chose a different image. My son won and that's the image I sent. So, [1] how did you manage to find time, and, [2] how did you choose the image? And thanks to Bill Palmer for coming up with the idea.

Speenth Posted February 29, 2008 Share #2 Posted February 29, 2008 [1] how did you manage to find time, and, [2] how did you choose the image? Great idea! Helps to bring our pictures to life! 1 I finished work about 7pm. Took the U-bahn and tram home as always, but after a quick restorative cuppa, I slung my camera bag over my shoulder and ventured out into the unseasonally warm but wet streets of Vienna. Despite the rain, I walked the blocks around my apartment taking pictures of whatever caught my eye. As the rain fell heavier I was forced into Pruckel's for a beer and a topfenstrudel (I suffer for my art). 2 The image sort of chose itself - it stood out from the rather mundane set I'd produced in two hours wandering about (... and sitting in the cafe). I attach some rejects for interest's sake. I'm looking forward to hearing other people's stories. Welcome, dear visitor! TonySx Posted February 29, 2008 Share #3 Posted February 29, 2008 Finding time was easy. Both I and my wife are retired. Choosing the image was easy too. It's been p*ss*ng down rain all day and apart from walking the dog a couple of times (the things we do for love!) we've stayed strictly indoors. There wasn't even anything remotely decent out of the windows so needs must when it gets to 10.30 at night.
giordano Posted February 29, 2008 Share #4 Posted February 29, 2008 [1] how did you manage to find time, and,[2] how did you choose the image? I spent most of the day discussing a big financial model with clients, but we stopped briefly at lunchtime. I looked out of the meeting room windows, tried without success to open them, picked up the camera, framed the shot and made three exposures before I got the highlights pegged and the camera level. Total time about three minutes, and no problem choosing the image! And thanks to Bill Palmer for coming up with the idea. Hear hear!
cbretteville Posted February 29, 2008 Share #5 Posted February 29, 2008 I knew I was going to treat myself to a latte on my way to work. I also knew I was picking up an old stereo receiver I've had in for repair (1960s Tandberg Huldra 9 - vacuum tubes and all) on my way home from work. The guy's tiny shop is just overfilled with stuff junk and old classics in one big heap. Both sites had possibilities and I had a couple of shots in mind. I chose a shot from this morning as it worked better than any from the repair shop. Big thanks to Bill for the idea. The number of shots posted shows how successful the idea is, 137 and counting as I write this. 15 minutes before the day ends here. - Carl
andybarton Posted February 29, 2008 Share #6 Posted February 29, 2008 It was my wife's idea, originally... but Bill has done the hard work this time round. With my M2, I shot a colleague at work who is leaving us today. I will have to wait until tomorrow to see the results of this effort. However, in the pub this evening, with my son who is home from University for the weekend for Mothering Sunday, I took a shot of his hands clenched. I quite liked the light on his hands, so they have been uploaded. My colleague may have to wait. (I have noticed that in the gallery section, where all these shots are displayed, the image quality suffers unless the shot is shown at native size)
ejd Posted February 29, 2008 Share #7 Posted February 29, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Yes -- I thought the whole point was that this shouldn't be a challenge! Any old pic taken on the day would be fine. The things that are part of the ordinary daily round are just the thing. The quotidian.... -- actually I shifted up a gear and went for the hebdomadal -- but the point is the same. I took out a few minutes this morining for a short walk on Hampstead Heath -- a small open space near where I live -- I wish I did it more often -- and took a walk around Russell Square (another small open space, this one near my place of work) after lunch. It was great to take out a few minutes like this -- even in the drizzle!
cbretteville Posted February 29, 2008 Share #8 Posted February 29, 2008 It was my wife's idea, originally... but Bill has done the hard work this time round. My apologies to Ann, I did know it was her idea (for new year's day a year+ back). Bad choice of word on my part. - C
jmr Posted February 29, 2008 Share #9 Posted February 29, 2008 Got up early to go for a walk with the camera - saw the rain and got no further than the back door, hence the snap uploaded. Well done Bill.
wilfredo Posted March 1, 2008 Share #10 Posted March 1, 2008 I knew I wouldn't have time today to go in search of an image so I photographed a flag right outside my door I've been eyeing for awhile. I also posted it in the photo section: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/other/47296-flag-cactus.html That aside, there are days when I do go out with the camera to do what I call "contemplative photography." Quiet days with the camera open to whatever mystery the universe chooses to reveal. For that you have to snatch the time. All the craziness will still be there when you come back, guaranteed! FotoABC Posted March 1, 2008 Share #11 Posted March 1, 2008 i was busy in the daytime, even taking my lunch in the office. i left my office at 6:15 pm and started shooting after dinner at a restaurant. i release my m8 shutter 84 times in Wanchai (where my office located at) and Causeway Bay (the neighbor of Wanchai) districts. The image i chose was captured inside the Causeway Bay subway station: 3 tourists standing before the map of the quarter, one with a tourist guide in hand. claude
Jamie Roberts Posted March 1, 2008 Share #12 Posted March 1, 2008 I worked all day and thought "well, tonight I'm going to drive into Toronto and mess around in the eastern industrial lots, maybe the Distillery District, and get some cool shots..." But--I should have taken a picture of the highways here being turned into parking lots by yet another snow storm. We had over 80m of snow (not counting rain) in February here, and that's a lot for us (Toronto usually gets around 20cm in February). I ended up turning off the highway and taking refuge in a mall that was all but deserted. Ah well Happy Leap Year! The end of the day, and a reject: Welcome, dear visitor! Dantist Posted March 1, 2008 Share #15 Posted March 1, 2008 [1] how did you manage to find time, and, [2] how did you choose the image? [1] Often use lunchtime to have a quick tour for digest training, since I am seated all day long at work. Found easily the idea of crowded place : Le Louvre, about 10 minutes footsteps from my job, located on the other side of la Seine, near Saint Michel. [2] Found difficult and unfair to take pictures of foreign people without permission... Went in the pyramid, it straight popped up to my eyes. Then came a man pulling up his finger for the lift to disabled people. I shot without thinking of anything else.
vertekijker Posted March 1, 2008 Share #16 Posted March 1, 2008 It is fun to see other people's contributions - from a picture of someone's computerscreen on his desk, to one of Fujiyama or Bush in his office... The weather here in Belgium was bad, so to play it safe, I first took a pic of a bunch of tulips in our house. Fortunately I later found some more things to choose from. I finally settled for a photo of bicycles in the bikeshop across the street. I noticed that a number of contributions were made with Nikon and Canon... Obviously it was not clear to everybody that it was LEICA(!)-day. I hope that some editing will be done.
Dr. No Posted March 1, 2008 Share #17 Posted March 1, 2008 actually I thought I would not have much time, but it went differently. First I choose my Leica III from 1933. It is now exactly 75 years old, and I thought the Leica Day will be the right event to put a film into the camera again. I took the Kodak BW 400 ASA and had the opportunity to take a couple of pictures. Now I'm waiting till the develpoment is finished, than I have to choose the best ... yours OLAF
gravastar Posted March 1, 2008 Share #18 Posted March 1, 2008 I had to travel to London on business and I thought after that had finished I'd have time to photograph the interior of the refubished St. Pancras before I caught the train home from the station. Unfortunately due to congestion on the "tube" I arrived back too late to capture the last light of the evening illuminating the windows. Instead I photographed 'The Meeting Place’ – a 9m high bronze sculpture by Paul Day of a romantic embrace that dominates the southern end of the Barlow train shed. http://blog.icelabz.net/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/ctrl-statue.pdf BBC - London - Travel - The Meeting Place Which image to choose? Easy, the one that wasn't ruined by the dreaded green stripes caused by the roof lights at the edge of the frame! I did have another of the statue of Sir John Betjeman juxtaposed against a Eurostar train which had just arrived from Paris but I didn't think that would be as interesting as the chosen picture. topoxforddoc Posted March 1, 2008 Share #19 Posted March 1, 2008 Well I took my camera to work (like I do most days). Sadly I was too busy at work (as a surgeon) to pick it up much. I went outside for five minutes to photograph some men on scaffolding, who wouldn't walk into the frame and then got busy again until nightfall. So after a glass of wine, I turned on my hi-fi, looked at the warm glow of the valves in my amplifier and shot that as my picture for the day. Sort of sums up life as a Consultant (Attending) surgeon in the NHS!! Best wishes, Charlie
usefeet Posted March 1, 2008 Author Share #20 Posted March 1, 2008 So after a glass of wine, I turned on my hi-fi, looked at the warm glow of the valves in my amplifier and shot that as my picture for the day. Best wishes, Charlie This is funny, ..and almost precisely what I do (relax with a glass of wine and some music) when things don't work out so well. It's amazing how things just come to you when you relax and the mind becomes highly receptive! William
