Tony C. Posted January 31, 2008 Share #41 Posted January 31, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) My reaction is that I do prefer the newer version... though it's definitely not equivalent to a mechanical M... and I do not find the two upgrades compelling enough to spend $1,800.00 on them. Advertisement Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 Hi Tony C., Take a look here New Shutter Sound - What's Your Opinion. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
newyorkone Posted January 31, 2008 Share #42 Posted January 31, 2008 I can't find any mention of the 1/4000 limit. I hope the upgrade will include a new shutter dial, because otherwise, upgraded M8's will have a non-working 1/8000th s. entry. This will certainly make the upgraded M8 seem incomplete and hacked. Englander Posted January 31, 2008 Share #43 Posted January 31, 2008 Brought 'em into Logic and expanded the view. It does NOT appear to me that it is simply the old shutter with added insulation. It's something different yet familiar IMO. I think you are correct, Jeff--it is more than just damping the old shutter. In fact, it is interesting that what appears to be the release of the first curtain (the first spike in each graph) is actually louder in the NEW shutter but every sonic event after that--impact of first curtain, release of second curtain, impact of second curtain--is definitely louder on the current shutter. The impact of the first curtain that makes the ugly hollow clack is the really major spike, and it is a camera shaking event. Depending on shutter speed, when I have had my M8 mounted on a tripod (yes, I use the camera for more than street photography) and have used a 2-second delay for release, I have seen the image from the rangefinder patch jump from the impact of that clack. At 100% you can see the resultant smear of motion in a photo of stationary objects from a tripod mounted camera. I would like a better shutter. sliversurger Posted January 31, 2008 Share #44 Posted January 31, 2008 i wrote yesterday that i'd consider upgrading to the quieter shutter... well after listening to the wave file plus reading sean's comments on his website, i think i'll take a pass. EUR1200 is just a little too steep for me to pay for those two features. with the economy the way it is, who the heck knows what the exchange rate will be in march onward. smart move on leica's part to protect themselve from the FX fluctuations though. for EUR1200, i'd rather put it towards a new lens! btw, thanks sean for putting up your comments so quickly. Albert4321 Posted January 31, 2008 Share #45 Posted January 31, 2008 the new sound does sound like my M8 in a Luigi half case today.
jaapv Posted January 31, 2008 Share #46 Posted January 31, 2008 So what would the upgraded one sound like in a Luigi case?
Guest guy_mancuso Posted January 31, 2008 Share #47 Posted January 31, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I read somewhere if it plays in Itunes you have to turn the leveling off or something. Jack and i will be at PMA Saturday and we will test it in person and get a report out. I was told by my Leica rep at the show it sounds like a M6 or 7. Paul0303 Posted January 31, 2008 Share #48 Posted January 31, 2008 DPReview still has the M7 versus M8 (original) shutter in their review Leica M8 Review: 5. Body & Design: Digital Photography Review I certainly would like the M8 to sounds like my MP

wilfredo Posted January 31, 2008 Share #50 Posted January 31, 2008 Yeah, the sound is less noisy, but please, 1200.00 Euro? May I suggest ear plugs? I've used the M8 in churches, and the sound of the current shutter simply faded into the background, never raising an eyebrow. Could it be that we make too much of a big deal over this? Why would I want to pay $1800 dollars for a little less noise hardly anyone will notice? I'm glad Leica is making improvements, but the cost is way too high, I won't be buying this time, hey we are in a recession here in the U.S. of A. On another brighter note, I'm quite happy with my M8. It is by far the best photographic tool I have ever owned. I'll keep it as is, and will download the new free firmware upgrade as soon as I have a moment to do so. mat_mcdermott Posted January 31, 2008 Share #51 Posted January 31, 2008 While $1800 is not an insignificant sum, it's not out of line for replacing the shutter on a camera--at least according to an account in one of the threads on this upgrade (I've lost track of the discussion a bit...) that indicates that Nikon charges the same thing to put in a new shutter. I know it doesn't make it easier to afford, but if that information is correct this isn't a case of Leica charging a premium ($90 plastic lens hood?!?). Hacker Posted January 31, 2008 Share #52 Posted January 31, 2008 Er... Chaps... How much can you truly tell through laptop (etc) speakers? Enough to commit to spend '000's ? I'm impressed... Regards, Bill Laptop speakers? Of course not, only through the $500,000 audio rig. It's a Leica sound file and you gotta treat it with respect. Hacker Posted January 31, 2008 Share #53 Posted January 31, 2008 I will upgrade, but am sad to be stucked to a 2.5 inch LCD screen when 3 inch or larger will be the norm by then.
Kent10D Posted January 31, 2008 Share #54 Posted January 31, 2008 Just listened to the shutter sounds on a "decent" audio system, and ... the difference in sound alone does not justify the upgrade in my opinion. Although, the character of the new sound, as opposed to its volume, means it will probably be less noticeable if there's some ambient noise. In other words, it will be more easily masked than the current "thunk". Think I'll wait for some reports from the field. I do like the idea of a future for the M8 though. Great concept, hopefully better implemented in future upgrade packages.
Mauribix Posted January 31, 2008 Share #55 Posted January 31, 2008 My reaction is that I do prefer the newer version... though it's definitely not equivalent to a mechanical M... and I do not find the two upgrades compelling enough to spend $1,800.00 on them. I second this perfectly! I'm bothered by Leica's hurry to make the upgrade too, and after shooting two to three time, i'm firmly conviced that my M6' shutter is much less noisy than this, anyway i would like to feel the reduced kinetics during shut, I wouldn't otherway find a need to make the upgrade. j. borger Posted January 31, 2008 Share #56 Posted January 31, 2008 Prefer the new shuttersound ...... but the sound still is not unnoticable quiet .....so it makes no sense to upgrade .....
luigi bertolotti Posted January 31, 2008 Share #57 Posted January 31, 2008 I prefer to enjoy (occasionally) the luxus of 1/8000 than this little less noisy sound... I consumed only 4 of my 10-set of screen protectors... I bet that my M8 will not betray me before 16 months or so of extension of the warranty... 1200 Euros ? I like my new Summarit 75... and one of my Elmarits 28 is 25 years old (the first-version-Wetzlar is another question...)... uhm, that fine asph... Uhm...Dlux3 would be fine as "always-carry-with-yourself"... Uhm... that LONG tele of V-Lux... ...pass by... for this time, I could have better ways to give them my money... gravastar Posted February 1, 2008 Share #59 Posted February 1, 2008 OK, to help you compare the two sounds I've done a little trickery. Unfortunately I can't upload the files to my website (ISP problems) so I've put them on Rapidshare. They're good for 100 downloads or one week, whichever happens first. I'll upload them again if needed. I suggest you save the mp3 files to your hard drive and then play them. That will save on download quota. 1. Shutters one after the other repeated: YouSendIt - Send large files - transfer delivery - FTP Replacement 236KB 2. As 1 but time warped by 75% and noise reduced: YouSendIt - Send large files - transfer delivery - FTP Replacement 313KB 3 As 1 above but time warped 50% and noise reduced: YouSendIt - Send large files - transfer delivery - FTP Replacement 468KB Time warped/stretched examples allow you to hear individual components of the sounds. The duration of the sounds has been extended with minimal change in pitch. Slight noise reduction was necessary to remove aliasing burbles in the stretched examples. The first file is no substitute for hearing the two cameras with your own ears if you need to make a decision (disclaimer). Bob.
